Hey I recently purchased DKS on steam but every time I try to play, it crashes after the first load. I don't get any cinematics.
Clicking on New Game for the Ego Draconis storyline results in the game crashing after the first loading screen.
If I click on Flames of Vengeance it crashes straight after the character setup is finished.

I get no error messages of any kind. It just closes the game and goes straight to the desktop.
I don't believe it to be a hardware problem. I have a pretty new graphics card, a more than capable processor, and plenty of RAM.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can try the Direct Show Filter manager. You can restore the directx codecs with it (in the 'Troubleshooting' tab) or remove suspicious codecs.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Also, I notice from the report that you've send that your video drivers are not up to date.

So I tried using the Direct Show Filter Manager and updating my graphics card driver, but the game still crashes :<

Any other thoughts?

Yes.
Re-encode the video with Xvid.

I would uninstall all non-native codecs and then try again. Just make sure WMV playback stays intact. You may need the AC3 audiofilters too.

See if it works after this. If it does, try reinstalling your preferred codecs again one by one, and see if the game still works after each one.

90% of all these crashes is codec related.

Any idea what the most common problem causing codecs are?

Registry errors from installing and/or removing programs that utilize video codecs.

Here are the latest video drivers: Lets at least make sure this is out of the way. Drivers are usually updated monthly. Try not to use automated programs for updating drivers because sometimes those programs just don't work properly. I don't care who gave it a super great review or how popular it is, this is me talking from experience.

Can you tell us which version of Windows and what your card and processor are?

Below is for ATI Catalyst or Nvidia cards.

Every time there I run into trouble on the road, there is always a dwarf at the bottom of it. Don't they know how to drive above ground?

Sigh.

The error has nothing to do with drivers...

You can try using the following third party tool:

http://www.softella.com/dsfm/index.en.htm

With this tool you can restore the directx codecs with it or remove suspicious codecs, one by one.

Hope this helps you.

Download and install the k-lite codec pack here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm

All the codecs are updated and error free. Install the standard version. See if this helps!
