Firstly thanks to everyone who's posted so much great info here. You've made DD an even more enjoyable experience for us all.

I read in one of the fine posts RE quest breaking actions (I believe it was Kiya's (thanks a ton for all that info)) that killing the big dumb orc would break the Slasher quest. The thing is that you get more exp for killing the foul beast and you get to keep slasher...

Problem with this route is that after killing the orc several times I find that I cannot save game after he's dead. Is this a result of "breaking" the quest? Does anyone know if there is a way around it? Do we ever see that big dumb orc again (think his name's Smirlok)? And finally is Slasher worth worrying over or will I have found something better by the time I've leveled enough to use it (I'm guessing that would around 15/16ish).

Any knowledge you could share would be much a appreciated...

The game disables saving during cut scenes; perhaps the game thinks it has not completed something.
I gave him the axe, but someone else posted that if you identify slasher but leave it somewhere else, you can talk to the orc and still 'give' it to him. You don't see him again.

if u wait till u level up a bit till u identify slasher then it has better stats. only keep slasher if ur going to put some points into axe expertise.

Drothe, my questbreaker was meant differently:
If you give Smiruk a wrong axe, he will try it out on his buddy. If you give him the correct axe afterwards: hanging cutscene, cause his experimental buddy is dead already.

I don't think it works that way; stats are generated when you first mouse-over the item, so when you pick up the axe (or even look at it), the stats are locked. Doesn't matter if you ID it that level or 10 levels later, it's already been "rolled up."

Just keep Slasher, it sells well, and you get diddly for experience for giving it over to Smiruk.

Just to say smirk also gives you a tip (it was useless for me because I had already gone up that ladder), he tell's you if you go up the ladder next to him there's an orc camp up there.

Biflspud is correct on when item stats are generated. It's quite easy to test as well. Save before entering an area, pick up something to ID and ID it, then reload and the item will be different. But save after you picked it up and before you ID it, it will be the same every time.

Once again thanks for the good info all. Was wondering how/when items were "rolled up". Think I'll just keep that axe till I can wield it next level and then go give it to Smiruk business end first

I think you guys miss the point. The question is - how the hell to kill Smiruk if once he gets angry and attacks you the game doesn't let you SAVE???

And there's NO other way to fight him except making him mad via dialogue.

And yes, I want to kill the giant bastard just for the kicks.

You are in a cutscene action if the game doesn't allow you to save.
Should time out in IIRC 20 or so mins to a sorry but you are stuck message.

He sounds broken; I've killed him and been able to save after that plenty, but I usually just piss him off without ever promising to help get Slasher. Lob poison vials at his feet, perhaps?

OK, seems that this bug is squished by sleeping. If at any moment the game doesn't seem to recognize the end of a cutscene and doesn't let you save, just have a sleep and the problem should disappear.

If only RL bugs were solved this easily...
