Hello, everyone.

One of the most mysterious items in is the so-called "Experience Bomb". It is very rare, so rare that I sometimes doubt it even exists.

Well, here I compile some of the Information once given by Lar I recently found.

You can make up you mind about that in the "go figure" style, but all I can do is give you this information which was once posted in a thread written between 22-08-2000 23:19 and 24-08-2000 12:13 .

Remember that visual effect you saw on a skeleton (burning glowing skeleton which was being sucked into the ground). We actually have several of those things, and originally the idea was to use them for special deaths. However, just this evening, we thought of this thing called the experience bomb, and as it makes a lot of sense gameplay wise, we started to use these animations for what is now officially called the experience bomb. Here's how we defined it in the design doc :
"Dealt randomly throughout the game, killing certain monsters can yield what is called an experience bomb. A special visual effect is played , and the player is rewarded with 10 times the experience points of the monster he killed..."

The experience bomb is being explained as the result of learning something particulary useful in a fight, e.g. a new trick which you hadn't thought of before. It works well gameplay wise because it is rare, and when you get it, you are a happy trooper. Because of critical hits, the idea was not to give such a bomb a huge damage blow (which you get because of the critical hits). The monsters to which it is attached are the common ones (meaning monsters you've been fighting already for some time), so not the rare ones. Why ? Because the reasoning goes, when fighting such monsters, you tend to get used to them, and you get a chance to try out new things and once in a while, this leads you to a new insight. (so, no, you don't get it for monsters which deal out huge amounts of exp.)

As for dealing it out randomly, it is not as random as you would think - you first have to make your enemy a common one (meaning, you must have dealt with them enough in order to be eligible for an experience bomb).

As for Tutamun's cheat idea. The same goes for critical hits in a way. In general, load/save is cheating and as a developer you cannot balance against that.

I once had an experience bomb in the catacombs of Aleroth. Somwhere there is a stairway to a gigantula-spider. After killing the spider I was pushed from level 4-5 up to level ~30. This was before the patch was installed, so I decided to install the patch and start again (no fun being level 30 in the catas)

I think this bomb was also listed in the fixed-bugs list of that patch. (not sure).

I paid more attention to the experience bombs when I played last night. Using the patch I still get them, but they are not 10 times the experience. I think it was more like 3 times the experience. I got a couple on the Orcs.

I was fortunate enough to receive three such bombs and a major nuclear explosion that took me straight from level 31 to 32 last night; about a million points for lockpicking a container. No complaints here.

I also got a few of them. After reading that topic I paid close attention for the last one and I got exactlt ten times as many points for killing an enemy than I usually got

I managed to get one, worth about 10 times normal EXP. It was only for a Corpse though.

Actually, with me the experience bombs are quite common, but I tend to hunt down every one of a perticular kind before moving to tougher monsters

I once killed an Orc while I experienced a kind of animation like known from the fanatic lizards (those wioth these ... orbs).

I guess thia was one "Experience Bomb", but I still can't say for sure.

However, the circumstances direct to it.

actually they're quite often if you pay attention to them but there's no special animation on the kill (or maybe I've missed them all)...and there's no way to get them more often I think - tehy're randomly generated like the stats for some weapons or pieces of equipment...

maybe I just have been skipping over them
I got another one against an orc that was supposed to be for 2000 so I got 20k instead
nice boost for a low level

Could someone elaborate on what these useful tricks are? Do you just need to kill something in a different way than you had been or do you need to do something specific? If it's specific what needs to be done?

As I understand it, the experience bomb is simply a random experience point bonus. The chance of getting an experience bomb increases if you are fighting an opponent at a higher level than your character. You don't need to do anything special to get one, and you don't get any special abilities if you do (the 'trick' mentioned was simply an explanation for why killing one creature could give more experience than another just like it).

I tend to use lightning on most things because it kills them quickly. Beatles, Lizard Mages, Trolls. Things that get in the way when I'm mapping out the Dark Forest and I'm a low level. If I were to fight 20 or so Lizard Mages without using lightning and then started using it would that make me more likely to get it? Or do you just get it randomly regardless of what method you use to kill something as long as you've fought several of them before?

I think quick kills are more likely to get experience bombs, but I have no idea if there is a difference between conventional or magical attacks (though I would guess not). Between killing quickly and clearing out the Dark Forest at a low level, I think you have the best chance of getting experience bombs. When I was playing DD I never noticed getting one (but then I mostly only paid attention to the experience points from quests).

But do I have kill them one way at first then switch to something easier like using lightning, or can I still get it if I always kill them the exact same way?

AFAIK your chances are not effected by what attack method you use, or if you vary the type of attack.

I think they do occur when you kill similar enemies at a quick pace, such as clearing the orc areas or sewers...I noticed that when I cleared out the west camp where the members of the Black Ring I would often get an exp bomb.

Where does learning something useful play into it? Or does that just mean you managed to kill something fast? I can do that with a high damage weapon but it doesn't mean I had learned anything. It's more just luck that I have such a weapon.

Aside from the extra experience points, you do not gain anything from an experience bomb.

The character's experience points are a measure of experience/knowledge/etc. If you defeat stronger monsters than yourself you get more experience than you would if you were the same level, while if you wait until you level up, you get less or no experience for the same creature. For a given opponent type and character level, you usually get a certain amount of experience.

In purely conceptual terms (not connected to anything in the game), if your character notices something during a fight or does something that works better than expected, they would learn more from that fight than with a similar opponent. This is not a huge revelation (like learning a new skill or getting stat points) but simply a larger amount of experience than other fights (increased experience points). The learning from your original quote is referring a conceptual explanation of an experience point bonus, not something your character actually gets.

No, I don't know. Maybe it's incorporated into the game mechanics like an extraordinary dice roll : Hitting the 1 three times means something extraordinary -> experience bomb.

It's just a suggestion, merely speculation, nothing else. We've never been told how it actually works, except this archived discussion.

So it's something the character learned, not the player? That's what was confusing me. I thought I had to learn something.

Well this is a role playing game, isn't it ? In most role playing games the character learns something, not the player !

Depends on how far you drive the identification process
Seriously though, you're right: of course it's the character that has the learning to do. My personal sword skill has not risen after playing Divine Divinity and I've tried a thousand times, but I just can't get corpses to raise. (And now I've banned from the local graveyard )

Where it says "a new trick which you hadn't thought of before" it doesn't specify you the player or you the character. I thought it was something I had to do.

The first time playing it I wouldn't know about Marked Ones or Divine Ones, about the Sword of Lies or the Black Ring. I learned about these things as the character does. Playing it again I wouldn't be able to tell Zandelor what happened to the Sword of Lies until the character looks and sees it for himself. However in a fight the character doesn't decide on his own to use lightning against creatures with low resistance to it. That's something the player has to learn and the character doesn't.

No, you are right, but how much xp do you get when you kill him?
Or maybe if you get an "xp bomb" when killing one in the black ring... (can't remember any names)

Well, I reloaded an old save game to find out. The amount of experience you get depends on the level of your character, so this isn't a fixed number probably, but with the 47th level character I killed him with just now I got 140430 XP, 12766 of which was added because of maxed out wisdom.

No Experience Bomb, but pretty nice!

Never had an XP Bomb with any of the Black Ring members either... The chances are quite slim of course.
