Hello, everyone.

One of the most mysterious items in is the so-called "Experience Bomb". It is very rare, so rare that I sometimes doubt it even exists.

Well, here I compile some of the Information once given by Lar I recently found.

You can make up you mind about that in the "go figure" style, but all I can do is give you this information which was once posted in a thread written between 22-08-2000 23:19 and 24-08-2000 12:13 .

Remember that visual effect you saw on a skeleton (burning glowing skeleton which was being sucked into the ground). We actually have several of those things, and originally the idea was to use them for special deaths. However, just this evening, we thought of this thing called the experience bomb, and as it makes a lot of sense gameplay wise, we started to use these animations for what is now officially called the experience bomb. Here's how we defined it in the design doc :
"Dealt randomly throughout the game, killing certain monsters can yield what is called an experience bomb. A special visual effect is played , and the player is rewarded with 10 times the experience points of the monster he killed..."

Hmmm, I knew I had to elaborate on it Actually, I was just checking if you were all still alive
The experience bomb is being explained as the result of learning something particulary useful in a fight, e.g. a new trick which you hadn't thought of before. It works well gameplay wise because it is rare, and when you get it, you are a happy trooper. Because of critical hits, the idea was not to give such a bomb a huge damage blow (which you get because of the critical hits). The monsters to which it is attached are the common ones (meaning monsters you've been fighting already for some time), so not the rare ones. Why ? Because the reasoning goes, when fighting such monsters, you tend to get used to them, and you get a chance to try out new things and once in a while, this leads you to a new insight. (so, no, you don't get it for monsters which deal out huge amounts of exp.)

As for dealing it out randomly, it is not as random as you would think - you first have to make your enemy a common one (meaning, you must have dealt with them enough in order to be eligible for an experience bomb).

As for Tutamun's cheat idea. The same goes for critical hits in a way. In general, load/save is cheating and as a developer you cannot balance against that.

I once had an experience bomb in the catacombs of Aleroth. Somwhere there is a stairway to a gigantula-spider. After killing the spider I was pushed from level 4-5 up to level ~30. This was before the patch was installed, so I decided to install the patch and start again (no fun being level 30 in the catas)

I think this bomb was also listed in the fixed-bugs list of that patch. (not sure).

I paid more attention to the experience bombs when I played last night. Using the patch I still get them, but they are not 10 times the experience. I think it was more like 3 times the experience. I got a couple on the Orcs.

I was fortunate enough to receive three such bombs and a major nuclear explosion that took me straight from level 31 to 32 last night; about a million points for lockpicking a container. No complaints here.

I also got a few of them. After reading that topic I paid close attention for the last one and I got exactlt ten times as many points for killing an enemy than I usually got

I managed to get one, worth about 10 times normal EXP. It was only for a Corpse though.

Actually, with me the experience bombs are quite common, but I tend to hunt down every one of a perticular kind before moving to tougher monsters

I once killed an Orc while I experienced a kind of animation like known from the fanatic lizards (those wioth these ... orbs).

I guess thia was one "Experience Bomb", but I still can't say for sure.

However, the circumstances direct to it.

actually they're quite often if you pay attention to them but there's no special animation on the kill (or maybe I've missed them all)...and there's no way to get them more often I think - tehy're randomly generated like the stats for some weapons or pieces of equipment...

maybe I just have been skipping over them
I got another one against an orc that was supposed to be for 2000 so I got 20k instead
nice boost for a low level

Could someone elaborate on what these useful tricks are? Do you just need to kill something in a different way than you had been or do you need to do something specific? If it's specific what needs to be done?

As I understand it, the experience bomb is simply a random experience point bonus. The chance of getting an experience bomb increases if you are fighting an opponent at a higher level than your character. You don't need to do anything special to get one, and you don't get any special abilities if you do (the 'trick' mentioned was simply an explanation for why killing one creature could give more experience than another just like it).

I tend to use lightning on most things because it kills them quickly. Beatles, Lizard Mages, Trolls. Things that get in the way when I'm mapping out the Dark Forest and I'm a low level. If I were to fight 20 or so Lizard Mages without using lightning and then started using it would that make me more likely to get it? Or do you just get it randomly regardless of what method you use to kill something as long as you've fought several of them before?
