Agreed. The first six months for a modding community are crucial. If the game can have a vibrant modding community up-and-running quickly, with plenty of lessons learned and documentation available from Larian devs and other modders, the likelihood of the game attaining NWN-style longevity goes up quite a bit. If the game doesn't have that kind of support and if user-made mods in the first six months amount to "Large Bressts Here!" and "Blue Sord Pak #345" then people will move on...

True indeed, although as for that last part - that didn't hurt the Elder Scrolls modding community much, but it would certainly be very cool to see more meaningful things than that. Especially since this game seems to be a spiritual successor to NWN in terms of user-made modules and party-play.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for: something that recreates the early modding scene in NWN. That was some of the best times I've ever had with gaming, not just modding myself but playing all the great mods that showed up each week on NWVault. It was probably a bit of lightning in a bottle, so I don't expect this scene to mirror that one, but if we can re-create one, small sliver of that NWN community feeling, I'll be a happy camper.

Adding my support for a modding sub-forum, preferably soon. It doesn't matter that the editor is months away -- there have been videos and info throughout the kickstarter campaign and I'm already thinking about what can be done with it, and obviously so are others.

A central place for editor FAQ, modding ideas and so on would great. Because it's going to be awesome! kitty

For those who would like to start talking about mods and stuff right now, we took a little initiative and setup a forum for now: http://weresheepmodforum.freeforums.net/index.cgi . It is still a work in progress, but can be used.

No threads have been started. You can start a thread in the right corner where it says 'new thread'. The option is besides the new poll and mark as read.

Edit: Also, only registered members can create a new thread.

I will probably join once I sorted through my thoughts and have something clear to say. Too many ideas and overall I am too excited about the editor to write down something concise.

As for only registered members creating threads.....you don't say. I wouldn't have guessed that.

Lol. I had to change the setting because it was originally anyone could create a thread, registered or not.

Edit: Also, join when you are ready. We tried to setup a couple boards for people to talk about different things, or to place their mod ideas. If anyone can think of another board that might be handy, please let me know.

Hm, tbh I don't like the idea of another forum. There should be ONE place to talk about D:OS (and DC) and not two or three. I would be very happy to see a modding subforum for D:OS HERE but I won't support an external (and unofficial) forum, sorry StromIV.

I fear that an external forum would even split the rather small (core) community and that's not what I want so see.

LC,I reckon there's definitely room for other D:OS modding forums, but yes, it's probably in Larian's best interest if a major one gets to be right here on their home turf. That would benefit the modders and the fans, and it would also facilitate communication with/for Larian's devs and the keeping together of all of us like one happy fold, hehe. smile

The forum is really only setup for modding discussion until Larian sets up their own modding forum. I wanted to get discussion up and running so to speak, so that when Larian does setup the forum we have some talk that can be easily transferred over to the Larian forums. As we don't know when Larian might decide to finally setup a subforum for the talk, we went ahead and made that in the mean time. It is open for anyone that wants to come in, but most likely won't stay around for long once Larian works their magic.

And even if it does stay around, I would think that more then one forum can reasonably stay open for modding discussion.

I believe it won't split it up. It's great that it's a temporary fix until larian announce an official site for early brainstroming.

We can have sticky thread here or something first. When you don't have editor or import/export tools, the only thing would be modding ideas.

I would like to see some sort of robust and easy to change file formats, not necessary text based.
Good game scripting engine and if possible game SDK.
And solid support for import/export assets( that's why file format is important, the easier to do it, be better people can come up with their own import/export plugin for their asset authoring tools.)

Adding new effects and spells/skills would be totally awesome than just modify existing ones.

Same here. I want their to be one place to go for modding support. Having two forums, especially once things get more active, will splinter the discussion. Bioware's NWN forums were my primary go-to source for info when first modding NWN and was a true lifeline. I would've hated having another place to check as well.

What they said.

In the meanwhile, does anyone know what scripting language the editor is gonna use?

In-house language, inspired by (but not like) prolog.

A forum is never temporary. People will start discussions there and you would have to transfer the whole stuff from there to a new official subforum here once there is one which is way too much work and almost impossible to perform in the right way. So some people who already begun a discussion/project there would simply stay there....

We should just wait with modding projects etc for some days/weeks until an official solution is found. I think that Larian already knows that we want a solution for that and that they will set up something soon.
