What is the lvl cap ? I read that is was lvl 20 but that was sometime last year. I am hoping that we can get the chance to grind lvl if we want. Unfortunately I know mobs don't respawn.

I think that technically it's infinite but as you said, monsters don't respawn so the actual max will be limited by all the enemies in the world. I think that even the devs weren't sure themselves about the highest level that could be achieved and you have to remember that this is subject to change up until the actual release. So the answer is: unknown.
Obviously mods will be able to distort this in any number of ways and if Larian do expansions/DLC, those too will have an impact on the level cap.

The highest tier for skill/spell requirements is level 18, so the end level is still probably around 20.
There will likely be mods to add combat, or add respawning.

Respawns are my top priority for mods ^^

Respawns are my top priority for mods ^^ I think that respawns only make sense in certain places....mobs and common enemies yes but unique enemies and bosses no. Yeah there will be more trolls and skeletons and spiders and whatnot but when I kill a very specific one-of-a-kind character then he/she shouldn't respawn.

I hope Larian will give us some slack and that the cap level is more 22, as some of us will rush the main story, won't find some side quests... so if lvl cap is 20 some of us will never reach 18 and get the last spells^^

There is no hard cap where you stop gaining XP after so many levels, no matter how much content is left. The cap is soft: you stop gaining XP when there are no more things which can grant you XP.

I wonder if you can go from single player campaign to multiplayer then back to singleplayer? If I was playing singleplayer then wanted to join a multiplayer game to farm exp/help someone out in their adventure then back to my singleplayer adventure, is that possible ? Or do we need to create a separate character for multiplayer games ?

Dang I didn't realize the level cap was so low. Makes pre-planning your character and skills so much more important. Now I need someone to make a character planner.

Or do we need to create a separate character for multiplayer games ? That's not possible at all. When you join a game, you're using the host's second character, with their skills, their level and their inventory. When you leave, that stuff stays with the host.

Ah, so I can't create a character and join someones game. I'd have to join someones games and I would take control one of their existing characters in that game. I see.

So is this level cap calculated on quest xp, exploration & natural enemies; or all those and every possible NPC in the game?

so murdering the entire world will get you to the soft cap currently projected at more or less 20, or higher? (I was just being curious, not ignoring earlier posts in this thread, stabbey)

I also hear that they remove the exp gain for killing fellow towns people o.o;;; That would put off some players who like to kill off townies and innocent folks lol...

I was hoping we'd get to like level 40 or something, it just seems like the game is only getting started at this point and we got a whole lot more to explore. Isn't the beta version only 25% of the entire game?
In the last beta I was able to kill of ZixZax and he was level 26. Using rain and ice spells, I kept him frozen and slowly hacked him away. The weaver of time was pathetically weak though.

Every time there I run into trouble on the road, there is always a dwarf at the bottom of it. Don't they know how to drive above ground?

I hope respawning for common mobs make an appearance as well. The "dead world" syndrome some games end up suffering from is awful.
What might be cool would be to implement weak monsters repopulating certain areas. These would avoid or flee from players initially, until they grow stronger and then attack players on sight. Not sure about the time table, but it would give players the option of being either righteous for letting them live or evil for hunting down and slaughtering the weak.
