can i create a entire party myself at the start( i.e 4 chars)?
or do i just make one and others join

you create 2 main chars and get up to 2 companions or henchmen

Do we know if we can change the number of companions per player character via the toolkit yet?

You can run with fewer companions; the Lone Wolf trait is designed for just that playstyle. As I understand it, the game engine supports a maximum of four characters, so you probably won't be able to go higher than that, although summons don't count toward it, so you can potentially have eight 'figures' on the battlefield.

I manage to have 5 henchmen in game, it was obviously a bug, but it proves that it's possible and it's working.

Don't know about the maximum, but it's at least 5.

can i control how the henchmen gets skills and spells/moves ect as they lvl up?

Yes (at least that's true for the companions and I expect the henchmen to work the same)
