Chaotica made a timer in the countdown thread but I don't know if its actually reflective of steam time, or if gog and steam are different or anything really. I'm a big help I know

Will the full release of the game be an update from the beta? Or would one have to download the entire game anew?
I am asking as I haven't played the beta, but if it is only an update from the beta we need to download for the full game, I may as well download the beta now so I have less to download when it is fully released. =)

Larian has not explained exactly how the kickstarter alpha/beta keys will be revoked and re-activation done (if you choose to get the Steam version). Presumable the last kickstarter update will provide instructions.
There should hopefully just be a seamless update if you activate the new key. If not, you should be able to avoid re-downloading most of the game by copying or renaming the D:OS install folder before release, and pausing the download after release, moving the files to the new install folder and verifying local files.

One point to keep in mind, should it come down to that, is that Steam now downloads new games to a completely separate directory, and then moves them when finished. So we would need to copy/move it to the "downloading" directory under SteamApps.

Wouldn't verifying local files have it check the install folder, rather than the temporary download folder?

I'm a big help I know Steam games are always released at 8pm CEST. Ok, so 8pm CEST (EU) time on Mon 30th June...? The timer shows release day is in 4.5hrs which is midnight my time here in GMT+10, so that can't be right, strictly speaking. 8pm CEST on 30th in Belgium is 4am Tuesday 1st July here. All very confuing...
I mostly come at night...mostly.

I'd be inclined to believe Lord Crash knows what he is talking about I think the timer is just a countdown to the day itself. My money is on 8pm CEST, which will be Tuesday morning for me also.

So then it's Monday's late evening or even later? Sigh, I was really hoping to start playing it this weekend, not on work day

I wonder why the 30th became the release day - probably just the very latest they could delay it to. Friday would be best... that sweet feeling of having a few nights/days stretching out before you. Though, maybe sales data indicates sales are higher on a particular day? I don't know. Also, isn't there a thing about games releasing on a Tuesday in the US and on Fridays in The UK? So yeah, release dates are all quite mysterious.

David said they aim for late afternoon in Europe. Usually this means 8pm CEST on Steam (it's a Steam update thing but I hope it will work with all the load on the servers during the sale...). Some games are released at midnight in the US but only few and Larian already said that this is not what they want to do.
@Robcat Maybe it's a financial thing? June 30th is the last possible day in Q2 2014.

@LordCrash That seems likely, if not a deciding factor.

I'm unsure, but if it does count the new key as an entirely new game, it may attempt to download it first into the "downloads" directory. That's why I mentioned it. Still, we won't know for sure until tomorrow. As for the release time, Steam (for example) usually releases games at 10AM Pacific Time (GMT -8), if that helps.

You shouldn't have to do all of that. I've beta tested other games on Steam, and when the beta expired, it removed the game from the Steam list and my account, but it doesn't delete the files. Plugging in the release key should just patch the existing files. If you're concerned about re-downloading, use Steam's built in backup to backup D:OS. Then after your alpha key expires, when you get your release key, activate it on Steam but don't install it. Use the Steam backup to restore the D:OS backup and it will install from the backup and apply any updates during the restore.

Though I've used Steam for over 10 years (well before the HL2 launch), this is the first instance I've encountered of a beta expiring and needing a brand new key for the final product. *EDIT* In retrospect, Dragon Commander did, too, but it was handled differently from D: OS, since the beta never disappeared from our Steam inventory.

I don't see why we would need a new key at all. The game has status as "Early Access Game", and I guess anyone who have access to the "Early Access" version will simply be patched up to full version at launch. Isn't that how it usually works with Early Access?

Isn't that how it usually works with Early Access? The KS versions operate a bit differently from those purchased as Early Access on Steam. Our beta keys are revoked, and new keys generated.
