So I saved Alfie from his wounds, escorted his owners back to Silverglen, and lo and behold, the blacksmith equipment that I could once use is now in a red outline! How am I supposed to craft bars from ore, etc.?

Ungrateful bastards ... haha

You need the furnace to make ores into bars

How did you manage to cure Alfie btw?

So, I found out that if you click the furnace with a red border, the owner gets mad. If you simply drag ore onto it anyway, the owner doesn't get mad, and you get your bars.

LordCrash: Bloodstone. Have one on your character with Pet Pal, start a dialog, and tell Alfie you have one.

Don't even need Pet Pal to tell Alfie you have one.

And doesn't just clicking a furnace turn it off? Like when you click a light source it usually turns off.

It'd make sense they'd get mad at you turning off their furnace.

The smithy behind the abandoned house in Cyreal has a better set up anyway. All the required tools are there + water barrel. It's also positioned away from NPCs, so you can craft in peace.

Ah, good call! I've been long gone from Cyreal and had completely forgotten about that. Cheers!

The first time I saved Alfie, his humans not only moved into the blacksmith shop I had set up, and replaced my quiet crafting sanctuary with constant chatter and bickering, but also stole it right out from under me -- they even claimed ownership over the water, oil, and ooze barrels I had put there. The nerve! And he kept saying "As always, be welcome!"... But then would not let me touch the furnace, or even the mobile kitchen *I* had installed there. Some welcome!

The second time I saved Alfie, sadly ... his humans did not make it. As a side effect, Alfie was also freed from his human bondage, and is now roaming the wilds feasting on bandits and goblins. Go Alfie! And I'm back to crafting in quiet.

That happened to me also in vanilla, and not only that, but I also lost a bunch of items I had put in barrels in there for storage. Well not really "lost"... they ended up in the blacksmith inventory and I had to re-buy them... again, the nerve!

So I already suggested the devs to LOCK that door before the escort. But they haven't yet unfortunately.
