I don't know whether it's going to work for everybody, but it seems to work for me. I have WIN98, Radeon, on VIA motherboard, a SB Live, and AMD. During scrying scenes, the game would regularly crash, and I got sick of all the restart/reconfigure needed to get through them. However, I found out that if you turn off 3D shadows and fog in visual/performance menu, just for the duration of the scrying scene, it doesn't crash, and haven't so far. You can always turn them on right after the scene is over.
Just in case somebody is experiencing the same problem, try this first before the restart/reconfigure drill suggested by the Tech FAQ...
Cheers
