But these crashes happen for different reasons.
Crashes can also depend on your PC

You must understand that it's not so easy to create patch that can fix this.

my first guess is: LOSE the ME OS. it's crappy, install 2000 or XP instead

yeah I need to get rid of this Windows ME I tried upgrading to XP but there was ALOT of errors and the entire computer ran slow. Upgrading from Windows ME too Winxp wasn't a good idea.. it messed my entire computer up.

Ive even tried to install win98se but when i run the setup.exe for win98se it says "this software is not compadible with your operating system. You may need to manually reformat your current harddrive and install windows98 se"

my question is.. i do have win98se. But how do i reformat my windowsme and install windows98se?

the only reformat that i can find is the system restore cd, but that just restores my windowsme.. it dosnt allow me to install a new OS.... can anyone help me on this?

I hate windows me cuz i need to restart it every 2 hours cuz it gets really laggy.... its been like this for years ever since i bought this new pc

Did you try a clean install of XP, assuming your system has more than what Microsoft claims are the minimum requirements (double for memory)? In any case, you need a boot disk to re-partition and re-format your drive. In Win 98, there is a Startup Disk tab in the Add/Remove Program applet in the Control Panel; it may be in a similar location in ME. If not, search windows help, or; http://www.bootdisk.com

If you could use a hard drive upgrade anyway, it can be handy to install 98/XP on a new drive, and leave your current one as a slave, until you have everything installed / setup and tweaked in the new OS. This would be easier than backing up everything and then restoring your data, and if you run into a problem, forget a password, etc. you can change a couple jumpers / cables and boot into ME.

A clean install of ME would probably help also (not that I am a fan of the OS), since it really shouldn't get sluggish after a couple hours. You might want to test the computer out for awhile after installing an OS to make sure it is running OK, then re-install one (or a few) programs at a time, so that if the computer starts doing it again, you have a good idea what the culprit is.

The easiest, cleanest, and most irreversable way to reformat Windows, is to use FDISK. This will remove any drive letter, and it's contents, completely. It has been some time since I used it and I don't have a copy handy. It sould come with Windows, somewhere.

Here are some rough instructions that should work.
[color:"red"]Use at your own risk and only if you are computer literate![/color]

1) Click Start | Run.
2) Type fdisk and click OK.
3) Remove a primary partition.
4) Select the drive with Windows on it and when it asks for the Volume Label, type it (it's shown next to the drive info).
5) Close and save.
6) Install another version of Windows from a boot-disk/CD.
7) During installation, it will ask which partition to install to. Create a new one to replace the one you removed. Select the recommended file system.
8) Happy installation!

Fdisk is on any boot disk. For the easiest, cleanest and most irreversible way to remove partitions, though, nothing beats zapdisk. (Fdisk is much safer, and can do the same thing in a few steps) For Windows 98 you would need Fdisk to create one or more new partitions; XP's setup program can delete/create a partition itself.
