Maybe. I've only been to Belgium and Amsterdam myself.

Yes, It's 16.

@Womble. Some of the beers I mentioned there are strong, dark beers. And 3 others are beers based on fruits.
Most of the Belgian beers are not wheat beers. Belgium is covered with little breweries, who all make different beers. All special/different in their own way. You'll also find beers you only can get for a short period. Depending on the season. And so on...

Well Viper, you clearly go for light coloured beers.
The dark, heavy beers and fruitbeers are different.
You kinda got to learn how to apreciate them. Slowly.

Seth, those dark belgian beers sound interesting. You know any names?

Womble the curious....

If you like "heavy" beers you should try "Kasteelbier" or in English castlebeer.

A lot of them also have blond beers and/or differend dark beers.
Orval, Leffe, (Abdij van het)Park, Grimbergen, verboden vrucht (forbidden fruit),...
Another differend one is Rodenbach. It's more red of colour and somewhere inbetween pils and more heavy beers. Unique taste too.

Ooooo.... Leffe rings a bell.

I did try that a long time ago. I do believe if was pretty damn good too.
I'll check my local liquor store.

Does anyone here make their own beer, by chance? At one time, here in the States, microbreweries were all over. I don't know if they still are since I never frequented the places. But I knew a few people that bought home breweries which was basically a large glass container to distill the beer in, and you could buy different packages with different combinations of hops, yeast and barly, ect., in them.

I could have been very happy not knowing that. "Game over, man! Game over!"

I don't do my own beer Luna. There are some pretty good microbrewery/restaurants around Boston though. I usually go to the 'watch city' in Waltham. They did a belgian-style wiessbeer (or whatever you call it ) in a 8oz glass because it was about 10% alchohol. (small portions for the wussy americans ) Didn't like it as much as the authentic stuff as far as I recall.
Grimbergen eh, Viper? Interesting. I reckon I'll get a list together and go shopping...

just an interesting sidenote about brewing beer. if you own a brewery you can't own the distribution company that distributes it.

I guess you ment witbier (white beer).
There are also different kinds of that. The one best known overhere is Hoegaarden. The family who started it here started a brewery in the USA too. I think it's called Celis White overthere. And from what I recall they brew different beers overthere too. Something you should do before serving white beer is cool the glass first. That's the opinion of some white beer drinkers here. But in a lot of pubs/bars/cafe's/... they don't cool the glasses.
And from my experience you don't really have to cool the glasses. The most important thing is that the beer (white or other) is served on the right temp°. And don't buy it in cans.

Seth,
beer serving temp. is very important. I couldn't have a warm lager for instance. If you serve an english bitter such as Tetleys or Speckled Hen at a cold temp you won't really taste much.
Most of the restaurants in the US serve the lighter beers in frosted glasses. Not bad at all. There are lots of good irish pubs in Boston too...

Mickey-how fascinating

Beer, beer, beer, you wonderful thing you....
