Why is beer here in the States so much weaker, or so I have heard, than European brands?
I could have been very happy not knowing that.

That's an easy one Luna. Here it's a tradition, a culture even. Chefs write cooking books about dishes based on beer, there are official beer tasters, conventions about beer, ... And, in the USA beer is mostly a mass produkt. Here you have numerous little breweries. Who all did their own thing in the past. And a lot still do today. They experimented, used "raw materials" they found in their region, most didn't cared about selling much but wanted to make something differend (what doesn't exist anymore these days),... The tradition is much older than in the USA.

LoL I wouldn't go that far.
But it's true that often ppl "go out" to enjoy one or a few of those "stronger" beers, taking it easy, while having a conversation about this & that. At some places some of those beers get served with salted nuts or cheese. Also, all brands have their own glasses... It's a culture...
-There are others who go out to drink lots and lots of pils too.
