most of the time i drink jupiler

Have to try that sometime....

Womble,
It's a Belgian pils beer.
Your every day, have a drink or two after work, common beer.
The most common ones are Jupiler, Stella Artois, Cristal Alken and Maes.
But Stella "belongs" to Jupiler (same brewery holding) and Maes to Cristal.

I wanted to ask before...
Next time you visit Belgium (or Germany or Italy or France or ... anything but Holland )
Gimme a call. I could take you to the English, Irish, American and good old Belgian pubs and maybe we could still show eachother a thing or two.

Sure thing dude. If I can ever get over there. I'm waiting for the paranoia at the airports to stop. (If it ever does. )

Yeah. Last year in the summer. It was still raining most of the bloody time!
Took the girlfriend to meet the folks. That sort of stuff. Kinda fun but I don't miss it much. I miss the people most of all. Most of the Yanks I've met are so....er....PC its painful.

understand.
It's very different, eh?

No bad... just different.
When in Flanders, one thing I miss about England is the countryside(... it's a feeling.)
When in England I miss the the food and diversity of it in Flanders.
Although... a typical old fashioned English breakfast... that's something they should still learn in Flanders.

If you visit Europe for food you should start in the morning in England, be in Germany at noon and in the evening in Flanders. And inbetween for tea and coffee breaks in Flanders (or Italy) too.

Different attitudes to life really. Britain took the american style of life too seriously though. McDonalds is considered 'Haute Quisine' over there which is frankly barmy.
I like most things about the US. The main thing I hate is their 'not my problem' attitude (unless there's oil involved).

Anyway, I'm going for lunch. Good food over here definately...
Later.

Yep,
Know what you mean.
I was even mentioning that to faile too, just a few moments ago.
There are lots of stories/misunderstandings about that american attitude (attiDude ) in Europe.
A well spread one is that ppl in the USA don't know their neighbours. That they all just walk by eachother in big cities. And that they all live in skyscrapers.
I wrote a short story about that once (only published in the USA by Readers Digest).
About a Flemish women who visit the big apple.
She rushes from here to there on tours and stuff. On a 5 minute break she buys some postcards and writes them while on a tour in the metropolitan.
She writes stuff like "the new yorkers are always in a hurry, rude and have no manners, this is my worst holiday ever"
She has to keep up with the guide and group though and she forget about the postcards.
Back outside she remembers, hurry back and look for them at places she thinks she left them. But can't find any.
...
Back home her freinds and family thank her for the nice postcards.
She's like "who?where?what?uh?"
Her parents show her the card they got and below the lines she wrote, there's something added.
In a nice, small handwriting you can read "mailed by a rude newyorker".

Know what I mean? It's differend. Not bad.

I think the difference is that americans are direct and if you have nothing of interest to them, they don't give a sh%t. There is no grey area in thier culture, so to speak. There are so many that have never travelled either. Less travel now I reckon. Kinda sad really...

Funny story BTW..

Yes. I noticed that too.
Most don't know there's a whole world outside USA borders.
(Except for Canada and Mexico maybe. )
That is sad.

And yes... it's that "if I don't get anything out of it, why should I care?" attitude that ppl here find so strange.
But then again. Ppl here are just the other way around. They're often to nosy about others.
The troubles of others are here the talk of the town. Not the weather or a war in Iraq or a chinese sub or whatever.
To the few who still go to church on sunday the mass itself isn't important. It's the gathering together in groups afterwards, and gossipping about who was wearing what to mass that sunday.
You can't walk through a town here without someone asking you if you heared about him, her and him. And then a next person asking you more or less the same about the first person you talked to.

Yeah. What you're talking about there is the small town-type of attitude. That exists here too because my girlfriend's from a small town in western MA. They have exactly the same noseyness as you're talking about. Everyone knows each other and all that. That's why I like city life...
I thought the towns that I went through in begium were very pretty though. Every house in the US is made of wood. Usually not more than 50 years old either. That's why I like our brick appartment building. At least it won't burn so fast!

Main gripe about the US. I've never seen a country so stupidly patriotic. You can't go 5 yards without seeing the flag flying somewhere. Its like 'yeah, I get it, you're americans! You want a friggin medal or something?!'

Godammit, gone offtopic in a beer thread again....

Yes.
There's a lot of "old stuff" in Belgium.
But hey, England has that too.
And traditions are still much more alive in England.

And I know what you mean with the patriotic stuff.
But you'll find those in England and the rest of Europe (the french and walloons are famous for it fi.) too. Not as fanatic as in the USA, but still...
I think it's us too, you know. I don't see myself supporting "my country" when it's involved in something I think is completely wrong.
I don't even see it as my country. What's so important about that anyway? I don't see any country as my country.

Viper-a few more lights old chap. How long did it take to line all those bottles up like that??

Seth-Exactly, it should be everyone's country to enjoy. Trouble is most men still enjoy marking their territory and keeping the neighbours out.
