Well, I haven't seen any other posts on this subject so I thought I'd ask.
For those who don't know I'm a chemist. Pay is pretty cool.

So Womble, that is where the chemist thing comes from. What sort of work do you do as a chemist? That's a very broad area.

Faile, I too at one time 'slung lattes' while going to school. Of course, that was back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth.

[color:"red"] Faile, [/color] go for the biology side of things if you fancy a reasonable job. Just a small piece of advice.

Already said this in another thread, but I'm a primary standards metrologist. I work RF and microwave. But there's very little in metrology that I can't do. (Though there's quite a bit that I would prefer not to...)

So Spick, what exactly does a shift leader do? Yell at people?

Sounds like you know what you want to do with your life Faile. I myself am a simple person craving a job that puts food on the table and beer in my belly.

A solid background in Biology will still help more IMO, even for understanding eco-stuff.

I am a genealogist. I spend countless hours researching and researching. It is interesting if nothing else.

Hi everyone,

It amazes me that most people here are adults! with jobs and all.

That's great because it fills me with hope. I'm still going to school (the 12th and last year - in the U.S. School system that would be college right?)

Anyway it fills me with hope cause I figured that I will grow out of playing RPGs but if nothing goes wrong I will still be "here" in 20 years

Zeus!!

There is no last year. Heck, I've had the regular 13 years (kindergarten through high school). I followed that with 5 years at the university, and then two more years at a tech school. And I still take classes...just for the joy of learning. In fact, in the last couple of years I've taken a class in Milton, three HTML classes and some VB just for fun. Nothing to do with my work. (Well, I do use VB at work...but I didn't have to!!!)

But you're right about this...you can be old and grey and still playing on your computer. If I didn't color my hair, I would be!!!

hmmm. I'd have to say what I do is more of a list than a single thing.

Over the last 15 years, I have spent about equal time doing the following things for money and the general good:

Teaching biology, ichthyology, and animal behavior to college students (Berkeley).

Working for non-profit groups either on US environmental policy, or researching shark behavior and biology.

Programming networks and websites for rock stars (like NSYNC and Rod Stewart).

repairing/building computers and networks.

Programming online databases for various reasons.

and of course... spending a lot of time playing computer games (fantasy RPG's are my favorites!), tho I have only gotten paid for that once

Though I much prefered doing research on sharks, I'd have to say that programming databases and networks pays better (unfortunately )

Not sure what I will be doing next, but working back into biology research is my preference.

Luna - that is very cool!
I work for SPAR Aerospace (they built the Canada Arm on the space shuttle) I work in the library. I also work at Costco selling flowers. In my free time (hA!) i refinish furniture - thinking of getting my own business doing that. I have art on consigment at a store as well. (I don't sleep much! - But it keeps me occupied) I was also thinking of going back to University and taking Archeology, but not sure about the job market (will i be able to get a job after more post secondary in my field...kinda scary) Plus, i am at the piont of my life, where i have a car, spending money, and can pretty much do what i like. University is more debt (AGAIN) and it would be like starting all over...

Yeah, I thought about going back to school for a Ph.D. but I don't think I could be bothered now. Too used to my money (not having to rely on my parents)and good lifestyle. 30's probably too old for that crap anyhow...

Well, i never think you are too old, but i get what you are saying. Now i have all i really want, and my own life. If i did go back, there would be student loans, and trying to get by on some job that pays nothing. YIKES! But, i do have to ask, what is more important, making money, or doing something you enjoy? Money can make you comfortable, but it can't buy sanity if you hate your job...well, that is my situation anyway...

I don't think you should let your job dictate your sanity. Just use it for what its designed for-getting money to enjoy yourself with.

Saying that I have been in jobs I really couldn't stand. I am beyond most of that now and have 'hardened' myself to butthole bosses and suchlike.
