What I think is to bring a possibility to open locked chests without lockpick skill.
Why?
I play a warrior, I hate lockpicking and pickpocketing so I have 0 in both.
But, I also hate to leave behind many many locked chests, doors, hatches just because I didn't want to invest in lockpick.
It could be excelent if there was an altenative to lockpick.
For example - if I am a warrior and if I am strong enough, then I could force to open locked doors/chests. And if I am a mage then I could use some spell that provided I have high intel will unlock the door/chest.
What do you think ?

I agree with the warrior thing. Just such as in IWD2. You could force doors, chests open if you are strong enough. I don't agree with the mage thing however. INT, by itself shouldn't allow one to open locks.

The knock spell is always the go with mages could be used by all once a high enough level has been attained say level 20 then its a case of going back to the chests to get the goodies.

Right, my idea is to give warrior freedom to be a warrior and to mage be a mage. Now, we are all forced to be a bit thiefes

What would be the difference between "Knock" and "Lockpick" if both will need skill points to invest? I see that using a spell to unlock a chest is more mage-likely but is it just that?

yeah point taken, if no lockpick skill (or similar) then whats the point of having a locked chest unless there is a key for every one but only the theif gets to lock pick the warrior and mage have to find the keys

a mage should be able to use telekinesis to unlock and open things.

...or a big ole fireball to blow it apart. I think the idea had merit. One of the funner parts of MPing NWN was my Paladin bashing chests open, or my sorcerer companion blowing them up with magic missles and fireballs.
I could have been very happy not knowing that.

but didnt it just get so boring after a while (mostly due to the sheer number) knowing that you could just bash it open I dont think I came across one in NWN that I couldnt bash open

Not really, no. There were some that couldn't be bashed - ones with quest items in them specifically along with some others - and usually those couldn't be opened with magic either. Not even the Knock spell. The DC rating on contructs is easy to change in NWN.

And this will enable folks without lockpick skill to find a way in.

Ha, then, each chest/door/hatch shoould have a key somewhere! that makes the most sense. i mean after all, who builds a lock with no way to unlock it?
