So I just found out about this game because of the EE being released for PS4.

I feel so many modern and AAA titles have such shallow combat and mechanics overall (looking at you TW3 and DA:I).
Couldn't keep playing these game because it felt like all focus were on story and the mechanics are very bare bones.

Been looking at some video of DOS and it seems character progression is quite deep, you can build what you want and focus is much more on mechanics than on story.

Therefore my question is, how deep is the combat?
Does it keep it on your toes and reward go play or is it just spam spam spam?

Especially in the Enhanced Edition, that will depend on the difficulty setting. You will definitely do better thinking about your approach than spamming attacks (especially since there is friendly fire).

For D:OS, combat was challenging, but with good character builds could become easy in the second half of the game. Combat and the skill system were adjusted for the EE, and a harder difficulty mode added (with changes to enemy placement, composition and AI).

So basically with the highest difficulty you will have to use different skills and positioning does become important?

Even on normal, skill selection and positioning are important; on hard they are critical, with much less room for error. For example, in the Twitch stream during the end of the D:OS 2 Kickstarter, a couple people very familiar with the combat still managed to get killed repeatedly (even in the first tutorial fight of the game). The stream cut out a few times near the start, so it is in multiple pieces:

I haven't played for more than about 10-15 hours because I want to wait for the EE, but so far it's one of the most rewarding combat systems in any RPG I've played. It's is turn-based so no spamming. Some fights I lost without taking out more than one or two enemies. When I went in the second time I had a plan and I anihilated the same enemies.

Combat is deep enough that you have to play with one browser window on the wiki. That's one thing common to many games that I like.
