If you encounter technical problems with Divinity, please give us this information:

Which operating system, which service packs, additions, with/without Admin rights?
Size of RAM
Graphics card and driver version
additional hardware - driver versions
additional software running in the background (e.g. virtual drives? Anti virus programs, Internet, Firewall etc?)
Size of swap file (regulated by OS or by fix value you put in?)
Game version and patch (e. g. clean install 1.029 + 1.033 or 1.029 + 1.032 + 1.033 later on?)
size of partition/hard drive, free space left
DirectX version
colour depth 16 bit or 32 bit?
additionals: have you used a fix download before (Raze's zip files eg.), used the hex editor, No-CD-Crack, Zakaron's game editor etc?
exact description of the problem you are encountering

Thank you for undergoing this procedure <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Okay, I just bought the game today and got the patch (1.34) and installed before I ever started the game. Now, the game crashes when I try to equip a shield or if I die and try to reload. Here's my info:

Dell Dimension 4550 - Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz
Windows XP home w/latest updates
256k RAM
Indeo Video 5.03, Indeo i.263 driver
Analog Devices Soundmax driver version 5.1.2535.0
MaCafee Virus scan
Swap file (my own) 750M-1G
30G drive/12.2G open space
Direct X 9.00
Color 16 bit (changed to this after initial problems)
Clean install, so no other downloads besides the patch

I tried everything that was recommended at larian.com, but nothing works. Thanks for any help.

Did you see the topic Troubleshooting and Manual Install Procedure?

If you re-install, does the unpatched game have a problem equipping a shield, or reloading after dying?

Well, I started a new character, saved him and let him die. I restarted the game and it fired right back up. I let him die and tried starting up my original guy and it crashed. I'll have to see if I can equip a shield when I get a little farther. Thanks again!

I ended up and reinstalled the game, but everything is working fine. I'm about to cure Mardaneus, so I've made decent progress in my limited time playing. Thanks for the help and the welcome.

Hey

Ok, here's the deal. What i have isn't exactly a tech. problem, its more of a lingual one. I was just in Europe and foolishly bought Divine Divinity without bothering to check what language it was, being so excited and all. All happy, i get home , put in the disk: installs in English. Start the game: ..German... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />
So... I was wondering if there might be some mod or file that would allow me to play this game in English without having to buy it again...

HELP

...Me...

By the way, I just remembered.
I bought the game in Thailand...and hey ...guess what...its in Thai. Which would explain why I couldn't remember anything German about it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

Contact CDV, they may be willing/able to exchange it. Don't expect a fast response... Check with someplace locally you might be able to replace it; maybe they could work something out with their distributor or directly with CDV.

If not, most of the contents of the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\localizations\english' folder are small enough to email, though not the voice.cmp file (153MB). Mixing files may give you text in english and voices in german, or it could crash the game. Another person did the same thing, but I never heard back if/how they resolved the situation or if they tried mixing files.

As a last resort, see German for Beginners. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

Hey

1) ok...well...about contacting CDV...big problem. AS you might have noticed my loc is Nepal. Almost impossible to get anything at all here, including that kind of service.

2) Local shops...yeah right...everything is pirated and the day they buy something from me is the day i learn to speak Thai!

But you know...i think the audio is for some reason in English, so if you could mail that Text folder or something you'd be a great help.

Even if the audio IS in thai...there are still subtitles in English right? I mean, im hoping they dont have thai bird chirping or anything.

If it DOES work i could kiss your digital self. But i won't...for sanity
reasons. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

If you can, mail it to lord_darg@hotmail.com

thanks a bunch <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

Are you talking about the sound files? ill have to live without. however, the rest of the file shouldn't be too big. Unless im mistaken, whatshisname said that the sound file was that big, nothing about the rest of the language stuff. If it is that big...oh well...ill just go bang my head on a wall instead. Im starting to get a favorite spot too... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

I emailed you the 'english' folders (minus the voice file; you can set the voice volume to zero, if you want), with the files in the corresponding folder structure. The dlg.v2 folder is from the patch. You may have to play with it a bit to get it working.

The registry entry I have for Divinity follows. This is needed so the patch can find the install path. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/exclamation.gif" alt="" /> The english release corresponds to the first german patch, though, so you may need to install one or both of the german patches before swapping any files. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/exclamation.gif" alt="" /> It might work installing the first german patch, swapping files, editing the registry to try to trick the english patch into installing.

Quote
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity\English]
"target folder"="e:\\games\\Divine Divinity"
"group folder"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Divine Divinity"
"language"="English"
"version"="1.0"

The file verification method in Troubleshooting and Manual Install Procedure might help identify problems, depending on how closely the latest patch brings the english and german version into alignment (if at all).

PS the email bounced, so I will try splitting the 1MB zip in two.
PPS I've tried both addresses.

What im saying is: the text files themselves, the ones with the subtitles and whatnot, menu items, basically the text in the game, cant be all that big. Not more than 2MB for sure. And Hotmail should accept that, if grudingly. Actually, forget hotmail.
Another address that should work fine is gravity@wlink.com.np
Itll be slow as the second coming of christ, but itll get through.

SO this is what im hearing:

1) Download the English and German patch
2) Mess around in the registry to make it match yours
3) replace the files, maybe go back and forth in the de/en versions, taking files from each.
4) play the game

I got the files on hotmail just fine...hmmm...so i was stubborn and tried to do it by just placing the English text files in the Thai folder, replacing those already there. Start the game and i actually get english text: those little messages like "Go to www.larian.com and join the forum to find out more about Divine Divinity". Woohoo <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />. However, the game crashed when it the loading bar is finished. So I believe the problem lies in the menu somwhere. So do i have to do all those steps? Am I missing something?

I am sorry to say mate, but I don't think it's a good idea to manually translate the game in another language. I am not an expert in this but I am sure you will always miss something important. Sadly I am unable to find a solution but don't give up hope: i might be wrong after all.

Hey, so what if everything screws up and the game is completely unplayable. After all, I still have the install CDs. Besides, whats the point of having it if you don't even try using it or getting rid of the problems. They're half the fun.

Assuming that everything works perfectly, which it does, and assuming all the text in the game for the gamers is one folder, it should be no problem at all to replace the said text files(note: Effecient programming would do this).

THe first time I did it I did not install the patch. Just replaced the files. This didn't work, so i reinstalled the game, got the English patch tried installing it( going into the registry and everything) however it said I did not have Divine Divinity installed. So now its full game, original text...yada yada yada.

And like I've said a couple of times, its a Thai version, and I didn't find any patches in that language. If you want to verify that it IS Thai, go here. I can even give you some screenshots with the Thai writing on them. Looks neat.

Just a thought: is there some kind of file verification on the CD's? That might be stopping the change from Thai to English. Beats me...

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif" alt="" /> I missed the language correction you posted while I was typing my reply to your first message.

I PMed Lynn, and unfortunately there are many differences between the english and thai versions due to Unicode. It may be worth a shot, but she suspects it will just cause crashes.

@Dragonfire: you can try this, but I fear they can't help you either.
I had somebody else recently with the very same problem, and he told me he contacted New Era and got a negative reply after he asked for an English version. But trying doesn't harm.
Sorry that we can't help you with this...

Oh well, what to do...

I took your suggestion Raze and emailed CDV. I just got their answer which is as follows:

Quote
Dear Sir,

please excuse but this is not possible, we make seperate language
versions for each country and therefore it is not possible to change
the ingame language.

-> only way to solve this problem is to give back the game and to
purchase a uk/us version of it

Regards,
CDV Support

I guess that options out...won't even replace it...

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> So reply to the email and tell them you already figured out the first paragraph, and you are attempting the second. Tell them it is not possible to return the game to the place of purchase.

I contacted CDV awhile ago for a gamer who ran into a bug which required the hotfix for him to be able to play, but the updated copy protection in the hotfix conflicted with his optical drive. CDV's first response was 'did you install the hotfix?'. It took a second email before they actually comprehended the situation. Unfortunately, their response was 'wait for the patch' (which they have yet to officially release).

If the patch V 1.34 is English Language Specific, I do not see how this may help Dragonfire.
He needs a non-language-specific patch that allows unicode and does not address dialog bugs.
In simple words, There is a need for a patch that addresses all bugs excluding those that are language specific.

First, I would like to apologize for any mistakes I might make. My English is a little rusty!
I had a problem during the installation of Divine Divinity. When I tried to install it (maximum installation) the install shield wizard was reporting a ”decompression error” when the 60% of the installation was complete. The problem was that the wizard wasn’t telling me that is should enter the next cd, so I entered the next cd by myself and the installation was continued normally. (during the minimum installation this wasn’t a problem)
I’m not sure if all the above have any connection with the real problem but I wanted to make sure you have the whole picture! What’s the real problem? Well, I tried to play but the game stops loading after I choose character! To be specific, after I choose a hero to play with, the game asks for the 2nd cd. I enter the cd and…nothing! If I reenter the cd, the game starts loading but always stops after 67104220 bytes have been loaded!

My info: Pentium 4 2.53GHz
Windows XP with all the latest updates
256 K RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400, NVIDIA 4.4.03 driver
Norton Antivirus 2003, Zone Alarm, Pop up Stopper Professional (I always disable them before I play)
Swap file 384-768 Mb
40 G hard disk (partitioned in 2 parts C: 15G (8 G free space) and D: 25G (7G free space)The game files are in D)
Direct X 9.00
Color 32bit

I have downloaded and installed the patch for the game.

That’s all…!!Thanks for your time!

Make sure you shut down any programs running in the background (anti-virus, etc) before installing the game. If choosing characters causes a prompt for the 2nd CD, the game thinks you did a minimum install (or maybe can not find the character data).

Hey everybody...

Just bough this game recently and although it mostly runs fine... after a while it just stops loading up.

Running in WinXP (which is my first cause for concearn) and the program just fails constantly. I can re-install it and it'll work fine for a while, then it will start crashing again. Unfortunately it would be very difficult for me to get a patch and tech support is a problem too... so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any likely reason why this would be happening and if a patch is likely to fix it.

It would depend on exactly what the problem was on whether the patch would fix it. It may help to install it, and couldn't hurt. There are also other benefits to patch, such as multiple (2 by default) quick saves.

Check out the Freeze and freeze and more freeze topic. While not exactly the same situation, it is also a case of the game working for awhile, and then not, which a re-install temporarily fixes. Maybe some of the suggestion there will be useful?

Hey i am having troubles with a game called LED wars. I am not sure if any of you have played or even heard of it before but if you have hopefully you can help me out. The problem is that i cant get it to run. i believe that this has something to do with the fact that i am running Windows xp. I have tried to find a patch but have been unsuccessful. If anyone knows anything about this or where i can get a patch from please tell me.

Does it crash at the end of loading the game (sounds like it), or does the game itself start, but loading a save game crashes? If the latter, can you start a new game, save and load?
If the game itself will not load, backup any saved games you may have and do a clean re-install + patch, as described in the topic;

Troubleshooting Tips (& manual install procedure)

PS were there and CRC errors during the install, or any other problems? Did you shut down all non essential programs (anti-virus, etc) running in the background first?

The latest patch is 1.34 (game version 1.0034A). If you have Windows XP, did you install the patch from an account with administrative privileges (it sounds like it, if you used the same account you installed the game from)?
Also, check the link I posted just above your post (if reading in flat mode).

are you running in winxp?
then it's quite possible that the patch didn't installed itself completely.

[color:"yellow"] So, is <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> still filled with bugs?

I quit playing over a year ago when it failed (for the bazillionth time) to load my saved game.

Just thought I'd drop in and say HI.

The latest patch was released a little less than a year ago.

From the list of fixes;
"-Loading of items is now more robust. This was the major reason for corrupted savegames."

Raze,
Would you happen to have a link to where I could download the latest patch? I think I got pretty far into the game before it quit working. I was almost to the next area, the wastelands? Thanks

It sounds like it is probably an I/O issue. I would scan the harddrive and then update the motherboard bios to the latest revision first(I didn't see any known issues on the Asus web site but they have always been sparse on comments.. You may want to try nforcershq.com to see if anyone has had any I/O issues though Asus is a nice company.. They would have to be. They manufacture motherboards for Intel.). I don't know of any I/O issues with the nForce2 chipset but check nVidia for the latest I/O driver too.

If that doesn't work, these are some things the FAQ suggests:
Make sure the color depth of your desktop is set to 16 bits.
Make sure the integrity of your files is not compromised by executing a scandisk.
Make sure you have no other applications running in the background
Turn down the windows hardware acceleration of the sound driver down by one notch.
Make sure you have enough free hard disc space
Make sure you have full read/write access to the folder where you installed Divine Divinity (which means you probably need to run as Admin though it is not stated which is kind of low security)

Good luck..
I would love to help more but I no longer have a multi-boot system with WinXP installed. I am assuming that you are not using software RAID. That could do it if the software isn't working correctly with the game. You could set up a nice mirrored set and gain speed but lose half your capacity or stripe and gain speed and keep capacity but without the data protection guaranteed by mirroring. Overclocking could hurt too but I think other things would start crashing first before Divine Divinity. Still.. you can monitor the heat on your motherboard with software to check that out. Asus has some nice utils.

And if everything else fails, it might be a good idea to consider dual booting unless you have a spare old computer. Running a old copy of a Win9x operating system for games is not a bad idea though I recommend a separate partition to keep your other data from being corrupted. It is also not a bad idea to have your other partitions NTFS so the Win9x O.S. can't read them. It is more likely to keep your valuable data on WinXP safe. NTFS is better anyway in many ways. It has higher security and scales better to larger disk sizes in part because of its small cluster size. The Win9x family of O.S.s is architectually different from the WinNT family of operating systems which forms the basis of WinXP, Win2003, and Longhorn(eta. 2006?). WinNT is usually much more stable and better suited to keep running when one application crashes. I have run both Win2000 and Win2003 Server for weeks on end stabley. They are however much pickier about things like memory leaks, protection faults, and other errors which Win9x ignores. It increases overall system stability but it often means old software doesn't run as well or doesn't run at all.

Um.. too technical but I have Dissasociative Identity Disorder, I may be different tomorrow..

Have fun..

In the configuration program, have you tried setting the graphics mode to either Software or Direct Draw, rather than Direct3D?
Try checking the alpha bit option in the configuration tool and switching off fog in the video options within the game.

If you run dxdiag (click Start | Run, type in dxdiag and hit Enter), does it report any problems? There are a couple of tests under the Display tab.

After starting your computer, have you tried leaving it running for half an hour before starting the game? see FIX for splotch problem/weird color areas/fog

Guess I should have re-read the post to get the time correct. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

If waiting helps, you could also try the other workaround mention there, adding the line "splotchproblem 1" to the config.lcl file, in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run' folder. This is a text file, so can be opened in Notepad, etc. If you add the "splotchproblem 1" line to the end of the file, hit the enter key before saving, since the game expects the last line to be blank, and ignores it.
Alternately, there should not be a significant performance difference between Direct Draw and Direct3D, so you could just leave the game set to Direct Draw.

BTW, a belated welcome to the forum. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

Additional: Have NO-CD but; it didn't play the movies so I went back to original.
Description: The game screen looks like techni-color rainbow really I looked on the support section it said to add in the following SplotchProblem 1 inside the config.lcl I did that then tried to play the game once more but it seems that the splotches are still in the game it only seems to happen inside a house or when then map goes to night time, during the day everything works it's almost like theres a problem with the lighting in the game.

DD shouldn't need internet access at all from your firewall. To improve performance you may wish to disable your anti-virus and any other non-essential background programs before starting the game.

If you added the 'splotchproblem 1' line to the end of your config.lcl file, make sure you hit Enter afterwards (the game expects the last line to be blank, and ignores it).

Did you try leaving you computer on for at least 45 minutes before starting the game? That has also fixed this problem for a couple people, at least under Windows ME.

If you're running Windows Vista with DX10 then your graphics for PC increase a game's level of realism, enhancing details and complexity in gaming worlds, apply effects like dynamic lighting and weather, and much more. It works on Windows XP as well as Window Vista same as vista works with DX9 as well, but; DX10 offer things that are only for Windows Vista users, while the XP user don't benifit from them it doesn't mean that can't use DX10 it'll still say you have DX9c on your PC until you upgrade to Vista.

The Virus Scanner/Firewall have caused no other problems with any of my other games until DD so I see no reason to disable it, since DD is the only game my PC has every ran into a problem like this to not want to play properly with my graphics card. As I said before my father has a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra which on his PC he had none of these problems if I new how to screen shot the image I would so I could show the problem.

I added the command line splotchproblem 1 at the end, then hit ENTER I also left my PC online for 2 Hours last night to see if that would help.

Well it is a fairly rare problem, so within the same family I'd be surprised if two different computers (with different video cards) had the same issue.
Um... do you think your father would notice if you swapped video cards? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

[color:"orange"]if I new how to screen shot the image I would so I could show the problem.

Within DD, hitting CTRL+F11 will create a screenshot in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\capture' folder (as a jpg in the original release, or in png format with the patch installed or an already updated re-release game version).

For a single screenshot, you can also just hit the Print Screen button, then exit the game or alt-tab out and paste the screenshot into any image editor, or most image viewers, to save. There are also dedicated screenshot programs you can use.

Also: graphics programs, for editing screen shots - there is a second set of program reviews in a reply to the original post

Are you using the latest video drivers from NVidia, or those from the card manufacturer (assuming they customize them any)?
Some people, though more so with laptops, have found the third party optimized Omega Drivers (for ATI or nVidia chipsets) better for gaming.

Did you try different rendering methods in the configuration tool, change the resolution, enable 'Use AlphaBit' or disable 'Smoothness'? How about different settings in the graphics options within the game?

Since the two known solutions don't work in your case, I'm not sure what else to suggest... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

So I just bought the remastered Divine Divinity on Impulse. Downloading and installing worked fine, I chose the 1600x900 resolution because that is EXACTLY my laptop screen. Anyway. When I play the game, it 'lags'. It's just not up to speed and only sometimes it catches on. The game uses all my laptops memory, even when I close all other applications.
I didn't have this problem when I played the old DD on my laptop, when I played the game in a low (non-widescreen) resolution. I'm already running the game on very low. Is there anything I can do to make the game run smoother?

My specs are:

OS: Windows 7
Processor: Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz (2.19 GHz)
RAM: 3,00 GB RAM Memory
Screen: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
32-bits

Does the download version (1.005A) perform similarly to the disk version (1.0034A) at the same resolution?

Does GOG or Impulse have any troubleshooting tips or FAQs on their site or forum?

You could try running the game as administrator, and disable desktop composition in the compatibility options.

If you alt-tab out of the game, you can try increasing its priority (Change Process Priorities to Tune Your System).

Beyond Divinity can have performance problems with more than 3072MB RAM (30-40 FPS in XP x86; 10 - 20 FPS in Vista x64). I have not heard of this issue effecting the remasted (or disk) version of DD, and don't know if your system has enough dedicated video memory to get that high in total, but you could try dropping the amount of RAM what Windows sees, and check if that makes a difference in performance.

I want to compare the disk version to the download version, but I don't know how to change the resolution of the download version. I downloaded it on Impulse and during installation I was prompted to choose a resolution. Changing the resolution was my first idea as well.

The laptop is mine and there's only one account (me :P ) so I'm admin. I will try to disable desktop composition. I did pick the box about 'run as administrator' though, which doesn't change much. I lost my save games, so started a new game. It doesn't run much smoother, it DOES seem to have a little less of problems, but I can't tell really tell unless I play some more.

Increasing the priority didn't change anything. If this affects how much memory DD uses, it remained the same at maximum. All applications (except DD) combined only use less around 4%, so DD goes to 96%.

EDIT: The disable desktop composition didn't work. I googled 'disable desktop composition windows 7' and got this website: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/22803-desktop-composition-disable-program.html

I did what the website said and that didn't change anything.

EDIT 2: I wonder if returning the game to its native resolution (or something) close will fix this problem.

There should be a link in the Start menu folder for DD to run the configuration program again, or you could browse to the file in Windows Explorer (..\Divine Divinity\Run\configtool.exe) to start it or make your own shortcut.
At least with the disk version you can change the resolution manually by editing the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\config.div' file in a text editor. The same can probably be done in the download version.

The desktop composition option is more for graphics and compatibility problems. I didn't have high hopes it would help for performance issues, but it was worth a shot.

How did you lose your saves? Some people have had problems trying to load saves made in the disk version with the download version of the game.
If your saves just disappeared, Windows may have just changed where the game was looking for them. Under Vista/7, depending on how the user accounts are set up, if you install the game to the default Program Files path, Windows can create separate savegame folders for each user, and then map that folder to the game's savegame folder (so it will just see the saves for the relevant user).

Aye, the configuration program is what I was looking for. Lowering the resolution fixes the problem. smile And I found my old savegames (pre-download) in the folders you mentioned, the new ones are lost since I re-installed the game (to see if that fixes anything). Thanks for the help!

I have been playing DD a lot today and updating on Impulse still doesn't work (first I thought it did), but the game runs fine. So I don't really care. But now I've run into some little things, not neccesary problems, but it's not supposed to be like that.

1. The transition from day to night is very abrupt and the music doesn't change in time.

2. When I walk into an inn, the music and sound doesn't change to what it should be (or was in the old disk version).

3. In some cases, when my character uses the teleport stone and when she 'warps' out of it, it automatically starts moving toward the 'Orc Drummer' I haven't beaten yet (southwest from Aleroth).

Are there any fixes for this?

At least with the disk version the dawn/dusk effect can sometimes be gained/lost by re-installing the game or by installing a patch.
Edit the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\config.lcl' file in notepad (or any other text editor), add the line "splotchproblem 0" to the end, hit enter (the game expects the last line to be blank) and save. When you start Divinity and load a save, the dawn/dusk effect should hopefully be restored.

The two tavern pieces were the only music in DD I didn't care for. I don't know if there was a change in, or problem with, the download version.

I have not heard of anyone else automatically heading towards the orc drummer after teleporting. I had to skip him myself until I leveled and got to an area where I could get a better weapon (he couldn't hurt me, and at first I couldn't do damage faster than he would heal himself).

The first fix works, thanks a lot!

About the music, I do care about the music, I liked it. So it's a pity it doesn't play when I enter a tavern. Thanks for the help!

Did you try doing a clean re-install of the game? Backup your saves (just in case), uninstall, reboot, shut down all non-essential programs, make sure there is nothing left in the DD folder besides the savegames folder, then reinstall the game, reboot, shut down all non-essential programs, and start the game to check if the tavern music is back.

What release do you have? Retail (CD or DVD?) or download (GoG or Impulse?)?

The latest disk version of the game is 1.0034A, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu (commonly just called 1.34), though that is hard to check if you are not getting into the game. The download version was released at version 1.4 IIRC, and the patch brought it up to 1.5 (1.005A); current downloads should already be updated.

The original English CD release was 1.0029A, though most re-release CD versions should already be updated (if not there is a patch). The DVD release is updated, so no patch is required (and the CD version patch should not be installed).

Instead of trying to start the game right away after a reboot, try the configuration tool first (should be a shortcut link in the DD start menu folder).

Did you install the game from an administrator account, and are you trying to play it from one? I don't know if limited access rights would give this kind of problem, but that is something you can easily check.

Under Vista/7, depending on how the user accounts are set up, if you install the game to the default Program Files path, Windows can create separate savegame folders for each user (as well as a 'dynamic' folder, used as a cache), and then map that folder to the game's savegame folder (so it will just see the saves for the relevant user). If access to the user folder is a problem, then uninstalling it from the default folder (if that is where you put it) and installing it to a different path might help.

Thank you, I was apparently updating to an outdated patch. I just updated to 1.4 and it is working fine. I appreciate the help.

Glad you got it working, and welcome to the forum. wave

If you meant Beyond Divinity, the problem was with the Starforce copy protection drivers being unable to install due to changes in how Windows handled drivers in Vista/7. The 1.49 patch removed the copy protection (which is included on the CD/DVD of any more recent release).

Hello everybody,

I have a problem : i just purchased the Steam release of DD and i am encountering the same problem as Wibbs. The game freezes every time i hit an enemy. It doesn't freeze if i miss my hit, but when (i assume) was about to hit the ennemy for good, the game freezes and i have to close it with Ctrl+Alt+Del. I tried only on rabbits in the departure town, but i assume it will be the same for every enemies, as Wibbs said. (note that if the cat kills the rabbit, the game does not freeze :D)

That said, this is annoying, as i surely can't go very far in the game without killing anything.. Seemed so good for the 40 minutes i played before trying to kill a rabbit, twice (lol).

I assume that it is not a specs related problem, but maybe more like a problem with the Steam version (i'm saying that but i have absolutely no idea on the reason of the freeze :P). I am on W7 Family Premium Edition 64 bits.

Is somebody else is having the problem ?

Wibbs;

Did you try different types of weapons? George should have a bow for sale, and there are knives, possibly training swords, brooms, etc around Aleroth to loot. You could remove your weapon entirely and go punch a rabbit, or something.

Did you try verifying local files for the game? Maybe there is a corrupt sound effect file, or something.

DisplayName;

You could try a different opponent, but it probably isn't specifically related to rabbits.

You're right it doesn't sound like a spec related problem. FWIW I do not have this problem with the version from Larian's Vault.

You could try emailing support@larian.com, with a description of the problem and maybe a link to this topic.

Hello Raze, it is nice to see that you are there by now laugh

So.. Where to begin with ?

I tried a lot of different things ! At the beggining, i tried to punch the rabbit. Freeze. Then i tried to hit the rabbit with a staff. Freeze. Then i tried with a dagger. Freeze. Couldn't try the bow as i don't have enough agility laugh

So, then, i verified my local files, game cache from properties of the game on Steam. It said that 8 files where missing, or corrupted, or needed to be replaced. Then launched the game again, on 800x600. I tried to quit the village, and killed a enemy. It worked ! Came back in the village, killed a rabbit, it worked ! Killed another one, worked again. Said "yeah, problem fixed", and closed my game, to launch it with my native resolution.

So, choosed 1366x768, came back in the village, tried to kill a rabbit, freeze. Was like "noooo".
Tried another resolution, 1200x600. Freeze. Tried another one, and another one. Freezes.. Thought it was only working with 800x600, tried it again, freeze.. I changed the settings every time i tried (shadows on/off, number of colors from 25 to 50, etc..) >> Freezes..

So, i wonder why it goes once.. Can't figure why.. The only difference was that i went out of the village. Should try it again. I will edit to give my results.

EDIT : So yeah, that's it. In my case, i had to leave the village once, before beeing able to kill the ennemies without making the game freeze.. I launch the game again, choosed 1366x768, maxed everything, went outside the village, came back, killed a rabbit without a problem. Tried again without leaving the village once, tried to kill a rabbit, the game froze.. Ah ah lol that is so weird xD Well, i hope i will not encounter that kind of problem too much, cause it looks so.. unpredictable ^^

To conclude : Do not attack the rabbits without a good reason :P

That is strange. I wonder what is updated or changed or avoided if you leave the village first?

Had you tried entering the catacombs, or going down the well (at least one of the houses in Aleroth has a cellar)? If so, maybe it was not so much leaving that helped, but the automated combat in the cutscene with Seth which did something.

same problem (steam, W7 64bit), leaving village (and have conversation with knight) didn't help. However it helped when I witnessed some cat killed rabbit on her own.

Just for more info you can even successfully hit a rabbit without freezing the game. It freezes in the moment he should die. Turning back to 800x600 (resetting config with no other adjustment) didn't help me either.

We've looked into this issue and it should only happen if the rabbits are the first enemies you kill.
If you first gather some experience somewhere else by killing other enemies, such as the dungeon or the orcs, you can kill the rabbits in town.

We'll update the version on Steam with a fix as soon as possible.

(reposting from separate thread, not sure if anyone's following this one anymore)

System: i7/nvidia 330M/4GB/win7-64
Divine Divinity GOG version

Everything runs well & stable (unlike Beyond Divinity, which is a technicolor mess)... BUT, after sleep, if it's dawn or dusk, I can barely move the cursor, much less the character, problem only persists until it's either full day or full night.

Fixes? Solutions?

An update has been pushed to steam. The bunnies can now be killed at any time and have been added to the endangered species list.

Please contact support@larian.com with that same description or a link to this topic and include a dxdiag.txt file.

Press Start and enter "dxdiag" into the start menu box
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool pop-up window should appear.
Click on, "Save all information tab".
Save As" window should be present.
Click on, "Save" (The file should be saved to your desktop as dxdiag)

and please also mention what version you are using (DVD / Steam / GOG)

So I bought Divine Divinty on Steam and it seems I'm unable to play it. The main menu is a 'greenish' mess.

Screenshot:

Link to screenshot posted at Google+
Direct link to screenshot (PNG), dont' know if or how long this works

The only things I was able to configure is the graphics mode (software or Direct 3D), the resolution (tried each now, even 640x480) and the 'Smoothness'. It doesn't seem to affect the problem.

Does anybody know about this problem? Some compatibility with 64-bit Windows 7 probably?

Here's my DxDiag:

Reinstalling directx 9.0c might help with this issue.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...m_en_us_search_mssuggests_131z4enus22051

If this does nto fix it, please try setting your resolution to 16-bit and let us know if that fixes the issue.
Right click on desktop > screen resolution > advanced settings > list all modes > select 1680x1050 16-bit (60Hz)

You could also try rightclicking on the executable and setting compatibility mode.
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\divine_divinity > right click on div.exe and click properties > compatibility tab > check the box next to "run this program in compatibility mode" and try windows xp sp3.

If you still have the problem, please contact support@larian.com.

Thanks for the quick response. Currently I'm redownloading (delted local contents) and then I'm gonna try the compatibility mode and directx reinstall ... gonna give feedback soon.

OK, so adding the compatibility mode to 'div.exe' (in steamapps) did it. Thanks again.

Thank you Larian_QA smile

By the way, is the Steam Overlay supposed to be accessible in game ? I can't use it, i don't know if it is a problem on my own, or if it is normal.

Thanks again for the fast support, you're on the alert laugh

Hi,

I had the same issue as mithrandir20 (screen looked all green no matter what resolution, etc) and managed to fix it by manually editing the config.div (NOT the .LCL) file as follows:
(do not run the config tool as it doesn't contain all of the options from this file and I found that will reset those ones):

// display width
width 1680

// display height
height 1050

// activate smooth mode
smooth 1

// show the intro movies
startup logo 1

// enable quickstart
quickstart "on"

// use compressed image lists
images compressed

// use flat file system
flat files

// enable/disable z-tunneling
ztunnel 1

// set the memory limit
memory limit 32

// enable/disable the use of bitmapped fonts
use8bitfont 1

// disables fog rendering
no fog

// set the color mode
rgb 565

// Select alpha bit
Alpha bit 0

What seems to have made the real difference for me was setting color mode to rgb 565 from 555, now honestly it could be just a fluke but as I recall that pretty much fixed the issue. Just my 2c, hopefully that will help someone else!

Someone else also fixed that by changing the rgb value (see the Steam topic Game screen greened out).

I don't know if I have a similar problem but occasionally the game slows down to a crawl with the mouse very erratic and moving very slowly.

When I finally manage to get to the main menu and select Quit the game goes to desktop and again extreme slowness and blank rectangles on screen. The mouse pointer sticks and nothing moves. The only solution I have is to physically press the 'off' button and logoff that way.

It doesn't happen every session but is very annoying.

If this is an entirely different problsm than that above I apologise for highjacking the thread.

Hello to you all,

I'm new here.

I discovered very late (too?) Divine Divinity.
And now I take great pleasure in discovering this saga.

Unfortunately I have a technical problem.
When I want to play with the 3D direct mode, I have the frame rate falls to 30 ~ 33fps.
Whereas with software rendering I 150 ~ 157fps.

I obviously enjoy the game, but not all of the effects of light proposed Direct3D.

I have a PC W8, Core i7, GeForce GT 635 2GB and 8gram.
The game runs in compatibility mode WXP SP3 Pack.

If anyone could me informed, help me. I'd be more than happy that I made two months trying in vain.

I'm French and I use google translation for you proposed a message in English. Apologies if this is not proper English.

Hope to hear from you.

Bonjour à vous tous,

Je suis nouveau ici.

J'ai découvert, très tard (trop ? ) Divine Divinity.

Windows 8 Direct 3D Issues / Woes

Are you having any serious graphics problems in software mode, or does it just not look as good as Direct3D?

It is in English, but check out the Steam discussion below. It has several suggestions and links to other topics.

I have exactly the problem of writing the player at the start of the topic that you passed me a link. I will delve a little deeper into the reading. And see if there is a solution that has been found.
Because, to answer you, the rendering software is not "ugly". It's just the lighting that are dynamic.
Raze thank you smile

EDIT : Nothing to do ! I can't play with the Direct Draw or D3D !
I can't find the solution ! frown

Heyo,

On Steam:
I tried using the power Divine Eye and the game crashed. I was able to purchase the skill (one rank) but when trying to use it, it crashes to desktop immediately.

I ran in compatibility mode and it did the same thing. I've encountered a few bugs that I fixed a using hex editor (hostile imp councilor, Drox and Garth, and holy items).

Not sure if any of the other divine powers are borked.

The Divine Eye skill should not crash the game (I just double checked it, with and without the Steam client running). However, there is an issue with that skill that limits its usefulness: it doesn't clear the fog of war. If you wish you can use iZakaroN's SaveEditor (or from Kiya's site, with description) to unlearn the skill and get the point back.
If your sight range is high enough it may still be worth checking out, then try temporarily disabling your secondary screen and shut down all non-essential programs before starting the game, and see if that makes a difference.

I was getting more fun glitches; attempting to read anything caused me to crash. I had Steam verify the files and there were 6 that had to be re-downloaded. My keybindings were reset, no biggie, but I never tried to use divine eye so I dunno if that was fixed.

But hey, finished the game! What happened to last week? silly

Hello everyone, I installed DD a few weeks ago and I've enjoyed it immensely, however, I've experienced a minor (I hope?) bug.

After George was murdered I looked trough his stuff, but one of the manuscripts on his shelf will always cause a crash when opened (there's a manuscript about a banned plant, one about a debt and the crashing one, which I cannot read), I uninstalled the larger fonts mod and verified my files but the problem still persists. frown

Is this manuscript important? What does it say? Any way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

The two manuscripts you can read are the only pre-set items on those shelves; the other is random, so can safely be ignored (assuming the problem is just a glitch and doesn't happen again). Whatever the manuscript is suppose to be, you may have already seen it, or it is likely to eventually come up again in random loot (and some books/manuscripts have pre-set copies as well as random).

Hi every time I run this game it has insane CPU usage in that it is at the top non stop until I tab out of the game. I have ran steam, eso, 7 tabs in google and other programs all at once and they have never been as high as this game. I really want to play but I don't want to kill my pc (I'm playing on medium even though the auto says i can play on high)

Did you try setting the game to run on a single core, or running it in Win 95 compatibility mode (which should automatically set it to a single core)?

Have you tried enabling VSync?
In the configuration program (where you set the game resolution) did you try switching to Software rendering, rather than Direct3D?

BTW, you can shut down the Steam client and run the game directly from the div.exe executable in the install folder, but that wouldn't likely have a noticeable impact on CPU load.

Right thank you for that it runs at 50% and on odd jumps to 80 but allot better when on a single core. but i now have lost all my saves and profiles after switching.

Do you have Steam installed in the Program Files folder?
Normally each save is a separate subfolder in the '..\Divine Divinity\savegames' folder.
Under Vista/7, depending on how the user accounts are set up, if you install the game to the Program Files path, Windows can create separate savegame folders for each user, and then map that folder to the game's savegame folder (so it will just see the saves for the relevant user). Changing the compatibility mode appears to have also change how Windows handles the save folder.

Check your '..\SteamApps\common\divine_divinity\savegames' folder, as well as the users folder:
C:\Users\ %account name% \AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\...
and move/copy your previous saves from the old location to the new one the game is using.

Try Windows 98; that should still keep it on one core, but may be more stable.

If you just run the game normally, you can manually set it to run on a single core (start the game, Alt-Tab, right click on task bar and select Task Manager, in the Processes tab, right click on div.exe and Set Affinity, then uncheck all but one core).

You can create a shortcut to launch the game using a specific core, rather than having to Alt Tab each time, though that may bypass Steam keeping track of playtime, etc.

Right click drag and drop the div.exe file to the desktop, or somewhere, and select Create shortcuts here. Right click on the new shortcut and select Properties. In the Target box, copy and paste the line below, so it is at the very start, followed by a space and the original path to the executable:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start " " /affinity ?

where the ? should be replaced by a number to determine which cores are used:

1 = CPU 0
2 = CPU 1
4 = CPU 2
8 = CPU 3

When you hit OK, the icon for the shortcut will be changed to that of the command prompt, but you can right click, select Properties and then Change Icon to switch it back.

Hello! After crashing of the game (Steam ver.) all map has gone back to black. Besides, doors in council hall is closed, I can't go to Zandalor to the statues of Seven. What can I do? Thank you.

It sounds like the world.x1 file in your save may have become corrupt...

First, try deleting all of the files in the '..\SteamApps\common\divine_divinity\Dynamic' folder.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.

If that doesn't help, the file in your latest save is likely missing or corrupt.

Do you have any older working saves? If you don't have one recent enough to revert back to, a world.x1 file from a previous save may at least partly fix the problems in your current save (make a copy of your latest save game folder, and copy the older world.x1 file into it). The world files keep track of items left directly on the ground, as well as quest opened locations.

There are several ways to get around resealed locations:

FIX for the Missing Catacombs Portal

Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor

and restore possible missing quest items:

Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files

Thank you for your answer! Well, I'm already deleted all files from "Dynamic" folder, it didn't help. Unfortunatly I haven't older saves (I know, I know, that's stupid). So, probably, I will use HEX editor, I don't see any other ways.

I have all the saves from my first game (excluding quicksaves, of course). What have you done so far in Verdistis? What council quests have you completed, and which scrying orbs have you picked up?

I finished most of the quests in Verdistis before going to the castle, so if you were to use a world.x1 file from my save after opening the scrying room in the council hall, you may have issues with unfinished quests in Verdistis. Let me know if you want to try it.

I did not take a lot of quests in Veristis. It seems that the main problem in this situation - impossibility to get out of the room with statues and Zandalor in the Counsil of Seven.

Another problem I noticed - I can't use teleports, it's all closed.

And yes, I want to try to put your file World.x1 in my save. Can you send me this file to my e-mail: amelmgn@gmail.com?

Do you mean the teleporter pads, or the teleporter pyramids? If the latter, have you talked to the imp historian in the council hall, in the side room left of the gong (opened after killing the succubus?

If the teleporter pads are not working, there is a relatively easy fix for that. See the last post in the topic Teleporter Gates ceased functioning. If you have an older working save, copying the telpstates.000 from that file to your most recent one will enable the teleporter pads again that were active in that save.

I've emailed you the world.x1 file from a save just after defeating the succubus, so all the scrying orbs are on the ground. That shouldn't cause a problem if you've already picked some up and scried, I don't think.

I dropped my dragon belt, as well, since I had already gotten it in Verdistis, so it will be missing if you use my world file. This will let you use it to complete that quest, though stats would be corrupted, making it unlikely to be of use as a belt. I had not gotten Finnigan's magic lockpicks, so there shouldn't be a problem getting them in your game. There may be other problems with missing keys, etc, based on the quests I already completed.
Alternately, you could use the file temporarily to get out of the scrying room and save, then in your original save use the catacombs portal fix technique to drop a pyramid outside, and leave one inside the scrying room.

Hey guys!

I need help with solving performance issues when playing Divine Divinity. I bought the divinity anthology pack via steam yesterday and in total managed to play divine divinity about 30 min out of those 5-6 hours when I tried to solve the issues by my own.

I have a gaming laptop (Lenovo y50) which has:
CPU i5-4210H (2.9GHz)
8gb RAM
Nvidia Geforce gtx 960m - graphics card
Windows 10 with 64 - bit system

what else information would you need....ask more if needed.

Main problems are continuous fps drops (drops from about 60 to 5 fps and rises back to 60 when moving around map), stuttering, slowness and long loading times in the game. At this point I've tried to solve the problems with every way I've found from the Internet and the game's readme files. I've tried: compatibility mode (everyone of them), administrator mode, reinstalling, editing config file ( as much as I knew what to write in it), nglide (didn't seem to work) and software mode (which crashed all the time when I tested it or started the game). I've also updated drivers.

I've spent the whole day today on figuring out these issues but without success. Yesterday the 30 min I mentioned was the time I got the Divine Divinity to work perfectly and smoothly without any problems, but didn't have time to play it more than those 30 min. Today when I started the game all hyped up to play I got bitch slapped on my face when all the problems were back. :D

I fell in love with this serie when I bought DOS: EE on ps4 and figured I had to buy these earlier games too. Divine Divinity looks also filled with awesome, but I'm hoping these issues can be solved. I'm thinking these problems are because of my 64 - bit system and this ******** windows 10.

Thanks to you all for helping in advance! :))

Those didn't seem to work frown vice versa made it lag even more and the game's sounds started to break really bad laugh....

Never mind my response above. I reinstalled the game and put those files you had suggested in. Now it seems to be running at least about 80% better which is enough for me. There is a little stuttering still in sight but its playable now. Thank you very much! smile

Clicking on any book/manuscript in the Developers' Area (Armor of Lahrian) results in the game crashing.
Version: Gog.

EDIT: Tingalf refused to disappear from the game after revealing him to the authorities.

Also: the quest to get the wine for Corina from Anthrabert (whothe wine merchant sold the bottle) never got crossed out.

HELP!

Zaknadrix is hostile! Can you tell me how to make him talk to me?

I noticed he was "red" already when fighting the succubus, but as the imp tlaked to me though whatever. Also, it was obviously not my fault, as to that point had no chance to interact with the character at all.

Now when I go to gather the Council of Seven, Zaknadrix simply attacks me! He doesn't talk to me, thus can't go further in the game!
I hoped I could charm him good, but doesn't react. Tried to skip the whole quest hitting the gong, but that doesn't work that way.

Using the Gog-version. PLEASE HELP!

PS: it says it has neutral affiliation, 0 value. Thought hostile things are always -100.
My characterhas 53 reputation.

A couple of people have reported a crash clicking on those books.
That set of 5 books is a German story from the Larian forum before the game was released. There are some details about it in the topic The History of the Lost Kingdom books, as well as an English translation.

If you are so inclined, and able, you can read the story outside of the game by opening the file below in a text editor (ignore the binary file warning; just don't re-save) and searching for the term Teil I 4 times (for Teil I, II, III and IV), and then Teil V :
..\Divine Divinity\main\startup\static\books.000

If you have an issue trying the hex edit or Jem's program, mentioned in the imp topic, zip the data.000 file from your latest save folder and email it to support@larian.com.
Each save is a subfolder in the '..\Divine Divinity\savegames' folder.
