As some of you know, the materials editor will make the engine crash upon saving your work. Because of that, importing new models and new textures for them have been more or less a no-go.

But here's a minor-tedious workaround, at least until Larian fixes the crashes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Step #1

Make your material, or open an existing project. Save and let the editor crash.

Step #2

Go to:
Divinity Original Sin 2\Data\Public\UserTemp\Assets\Materials\Preview

Copy Preview_Material.lsb and all the SK_xxxxxxxxxx.shd/bshd files.

Step #3

Paste them at your mod assets location
\Divinity Original Sin 2\Data\Editor\Mods\YourMod\Assets\Materials

Step #4

Rename them to something recognizable

Step #5

Import that MaterialName.lsb through normal means, add to model.

Step #6

Profit. Make cool stuff!

While the editor shouldn't crash, apparently the issue is that you are saving the file in the wrong directory. You should save it somewhere under Data\Editor\Mods\YourMod\. The editor will then place the generated files (shaders etc) in Data\Public\YourMod\...

You're absolutely right! That did work saving the .shd files without crashing, but where would it put the .lsb which the Resource Manager asks for when importing materials?

Should be next to the generated *.shd and *.bshd files in your Public folder.

It isn't. And it isn't for many I've talked to, hence the necessity for this workaround.
