Hello,
the game worked stable until i reached lvl 12. Now it frequently crashes to the desktop the moment im hitting the trade button of one of the merchants. Following a crash the save game is corupted and the crash always happens in similar situations. At first i "solved" the problem by using another savegame. But now it happens frequently and the game is no longer playable.
Thanks for your advice

P.S
I already made a fresh instalation. And checked the graphics driver.

Have you done an extreme amount of crafting and trading, possibly leaving the game running idle to get merchants to regenerate their inventories, etc? There is a known issue that can cause a crash when trading (usually with particular NPCs you've traded with a lot), or when teleporting between regions. It is unlikely you would be able to trigger this issue (the game running out of item handles) at level 12, though, with normal gameplay.

I did a lot of trading and crafting. My inventory is flooded with crafting an trading items. I recently discovered that the merchants often sold items identical to items i allready owned.

My only low lvl save games seems to work stable and if im hitting the trade button the trading screen imidiatly opens without any loading time.

Is that a normal 'a lot' (at every level up and maybe after an hour playtime), or really 'a lot'? Did you do things like repeatedly crafting axes and swords to sell, turn them back into bars if they didn't have an AP bonus (highest sell value) and craft them again?

Check your play time (that will be shown as part of the default name when making a manual save). It depends a great deal how much you loot, trade and craft, but generally, as far as I recall the people who ran into this issue in the latest game version tended to have a play time of around 70 to 150+ hours.

Its game time day 43. My playstile is that my current game is always working in the backround during the time my pc is on. So it frequently happens that divinity is working for a couple of hours (no pause function ?!). And for a lack of real live free time im only playing a few minutes. This short time i often use to play the boring ingame game walking around buying crafting items at the vendors . Average i did for sure more than one merchant run per lvl but i didnt recraft any items. I just bought any armor or arrow ingredient i could get.

That would do it. Checking a save for 3 different playthroughs, either just before or after the final fight, they were at day 16 (74 hours), day 24 (113 hours) and day 34 (160 hours).

There is no pause function, and unfortunately, no way to clean up or recover handles that are no longer used (if the item was destroyed or consumed). Reverting to an earlier save may help (if you stop leaving the game running in the background and trading whenever you have a few minutes), but there is no way to tell for sure how far back would be safe (it would depend on how much trading/looting/crafting would be undone by reverting, and how much loot generation would be unavoidable while replaying and continuing through the rest of the game). There is no way to fix this issue in the save itself.

When the item generation system was first designed, the number of handles seemed to be practically unlimited, so there was no reason to make it overly complicated by reusing handles, etc. As development progressed, the game grew significantly (even then nobody hit the limit in the original release, until after the EE was out; the playtime was over 550 hours) and changes in the EE increased the demand for handles (more items being classified as global, rather than local). This resulted in the limit being reachable by a great deal of crafting/trading/looting, or leaving the game running and checking trading periodically.

Thats frustrating. As i said i didnt like this kind of continuously item hunting or crafting an ididnt at the start of the game. But there was a point in the game ( lvl 6 the crabs in the pirate cave ) where every trash enemy caused a situation that i had to frequently resurect Madora. After refreshing equipment and especially skillbooks (why are they so expensive? Why cant you choose one or two for free if you increase the related abilitie?) the difficultie was reduced to a normal lvl.
I really like the game and especially the turn based combat. But what stops me to immediatly start a new game is the inventory management. Its annoying to invest as much time in clearing the inventory as in really playing the game. I hope the developers did change something regarding the inventory management for Divinity Os 2. Its not oldschool its simply outdated. Other developers choosed much more player comfortable solutions (Pillars) without reducing the complexity of the game.

Does this issue still exist in DOS II ? And if it doesn't exist anymore: How did they fix it? Did they just increase the limit, did they allow the game to reuse IDs which are not used anymore? As the engine didn't change I would really like to know this as we are using an instant restock mod so we can buy what we need (well, until we run out of money which happens a lot) instead of relying on crafting or random loot.

No, this issue does not exist in D:OS 2. The item system was changed to use 64 bit handles, rather than 32, which greatly expands the available number of handles.

Thank you for your answer Raze! That's a huge relief for us. I don't know any other company where the employees are as helpful as you guys when it comes to such in depth questions! You never stopped to care about your games and your community even after DOSII became more successful than anyone could have imagined. You guys combine the best parts of small indie devs and huge triple-A-companies into a perfect mix to create games which bring happiness to millions without becoming greedy with microtransactions or other nonesense which destroy the gameplay and fun of many games these days. smile

The old limit was around 64000 handles, right? Do you happen to know how much higher the new limit for handles is? I'm curious how much we can push the engine with mods. (e.g. a casino mod where a new loottable is generated each time you play and you can pick one of the items if you win gambles, which might create a few thousand extra handles in a long 100% playthrough, especially with all four playerslots filled by someone) I know that the total handles double with 64bit but the item handles are just a small part of the total handles. That means you could have easily increased the itemhandles by ten times of what they used to be because you didn't have to double the handles in other parts of the game. (as most other parts of the gameengine which don't use static handles can most likely erase and reuse handles which become obsolete)

I must say this is HIGHLY disappointing. This is my first play through, I've spent WEEKS getting to level 15 and now I can't finish the game because I crafted too much??!! How else are you supposed to make money to buy things? 86 days game time down the drain? Really?? This is a defective product and I requested a refund through Steam. Shame on you Larian for never fixing this.

EDIT: The reason I am so upset is because I really liked the game, but it's now unplayable for me.

Hello Maestro Domus,

you have my sympathies, but to asking for a refund after you had WEEKS [sic] of presumable fun seems a little exaggerated (and IMHO unfair to the devs who spend YEARS to make this game), especially since you could revert to an older save or start a new game, maybe with a very different character build to spice up the rerun?

Although money is a little sparse at the beginning, after awhile you really shouldn't have any money problems later in the game. Just search the web for "divinity original sin making money" and you'll find many sites with tips for making money in DOS:EE. Some examples: Take any sidequests you can get, identify everything before selling it, and if your conscience allows it, steal and pickpocket the hell out of your surroundings to get rich VERY fast.

On the matter of stealing: If you you're strong on the roleplaying side – my friend and I played it this way: I had a very moral Inquisitor while she played a Scoundrel with a more … "practical" attitude. Our meta-game rule was that her Scoundrel could break the law as long as my Inquistor didn't get to know about it. This also created some very nice inter-character conversations when morality was an issue, and I (in the role of my Inquisitor) complained more than once about why the order of the Source Hunters would pair me with such a shady companion. A test of my own steadfastness? Me as a mentor for this lost child? smile

But I digress. To conclude, since you like the game already, I strongly recommend that you don't let yourself be stopped playing it by this unfortunate issue. It may prevent you to play exactly the way you want (or erroneously think you have to for the money), but one of DOS' strong points is that you can play it in many different manners. In my very subjective opinion, it is one of the best games in its genre and worth playing it despite a single show-stopper.

Best regards
Raban

I uninstalled and will not be playing this again. Fool me once...

I feel like I paid to see a movie and they shut it off 3/4 of the way through. Sorry but this is inexcusable. I would have much preferred knowing this before I purchased because I would have avoided the game. The fact that I played it for weeks just makes it even worse with all that time invested in a dead end! $45 for a broken game I can't finish, and I certainly don't want to start over and chance even more wasted time and disappointment. It is indeed a defective product, it doesn't matter how many years they spent working on it, they made a broken game and have some nerve not fixing it and still selling it! I wish there were lemon laws for games because DOS EE would certainly qualify.

Two years. I have refused to purchase any further Larian products due to the lack of any movement on this game breaking issue or any compensation for my wasted money and time. They could have given me DOS II or Baldurs gate as compensation as I requested but chose not to. Larian forgoes ethics for monetary gain. Fool me once...
