Yeah, Pact of the Chain Warlocks get cool familiars, but Wizard familiars are fairly mundane. There is a 6th level Wizard spell to create a homunculus, but they're rather fragile.

trying to remember what games even let me have a fmailliar, i know ToEE did
i also remember scouting with familliars in an RTWP game, but i dont think it was NWN

Actually NWN had the best familiars and animal companion system compared to other D&D based game. And it was quite easy to add your own using toolset. The only drawback I remember was that some familiars were unbalanced and on higher levels (30+) were basically useless.
