Did anyone else here have trouble with Zagan? Or is this a bug?

Hello, people.

In the quest of High Hall, I was supposed to kill off this flying demon called Zagan. I was level 32 when I faced him. He was at the low 20s level. The demons that I killed before him were an absolute breeze, as I was overleveled. But when I faced him, I died several times. It was weird. He was spamming this certain ranged attack on me and my massive health bar, which was 1200+, got decimated easily. When he did it, it made a very loud and weird sound. It didn't sound natural. It sounded like it was some sort of computer error, or something. It's hard to explain. It was like listening to a piece of music that plays and replays the same exact moment of sound every 1/10th of a second.

I used to play the original Ego Draconis and never had issues with Zagan there. Did the DKS/Developers version change this for the worse or something? Or is this just a bug in my game?

I managed to kill him off by maxing out my dragon shield ability and spamming healing potions and rejuvenating potions. But still, the fact that I had to rely on those AT LEVEL 32 makes the whole thing very, very unusual.

So is this a bug? Or is this normal?

I'm not sure. I do remember Zagan seemingly becoming very much more difficult once they'd rebalanced Ego Draconis into DKS, which was unusual as most other encounters seemed a bit easier. I vaguely recall I ended up having to fly up to the top of the cavern and hide in a cave taking occasional pot-shots when it was safe to do so which seemed a rather inelegant way of dealing with him.

This section was changed to be a lot tougher in DKS. In D2:ED I could just sit in place spamming fireballs, being attacked but not take any damage (wasn't that much higher in level), but in DKS had to leave it until a higher level (killed Zagan in the low 20s, but couldn't clear the rest of the cave, so reloaded rather than skip them, since you can not return there).
I killed Zagan without needing to fly to the exit to transform, but using hit and run tactics there was the only way I could clear the rest of the cave (Zagan tips).

The sound and Zagan's attack doing that much damage was likely a bug, though. There is a known issue where bosses can have a fast, overpowered attack (Ba'al. The Impossible foe?). Most commonly it happens with Ba'al, Laiken or the flying fortress generals, but IIRC it has happened with Zagan once or twice.

And here I am again. I'm level 26, nearly got pwned (and in fact did get pwned a couple of times) so I think I'll come back later. This is one of three encounters I really struggled with, the others being the never-ending horde interrupting Zandalor's interminable casting and the Zeppelin escort. I think all are down to tactics to a significant degree which is something I've always struggled with; I think it's also significant that it seems that much of the difficulty is when in dragon form, which I guess is either underpowered or simply that there's much more scope for enemies to disappear out of view and come at you unseen. Probably both, I suspect.

I never did do the escort - after seemingly infinite tries, I just googled the end scene movie. I had to fly into the cave you mentioned several times to beat Zagon and I never did go after the others there. I didn't like having to do that - reminded me of Gothic-1 sitting on the siege engine that the orcs for some reason could not climb onto and raining endless arrows down on them until they finally died as I stood no chance in melee. I had some trouble protecting Zandalor too but usually did so.

It took me possibly dozens of tries to do the escort; and then I did it all again because I wanted to save the Zep but it turns out it's scripted that way! And in terms of gameplay there's only the (much easier, comparatively) fight with Ygerna after that anyway.

I dunno if the dragon's AOE spell might help with Zagan's swarm of mosquitoes but I haven't put any points into it and certainly at the moment I'm too skint to respec! I may give it a try at some point later in the game though. I may also have a look at those NIF-embedded XML files: if I can figure out the format it's possible they may give me the opportunity to properly mod the game instead of just mucking about with outfits and stuff.

Since Zagan was too difficult, I thought I'd try a one-woman raid on the fortresses. I died quickly. I'm at too low a level as it is, but probably indifferently-levelled and equipped on top of that. In fact I'm still using equipment I acquired many levels ago, probably still hanging on to the mistaken belief that armour sets are somehow more desirable than random mismatched scumbag bits of armour. They may or may not be, but I suspect it's time for an upgrade. I think Mr Smashy is still holding his own, though.

I often wondered about that but never tried to match them up going for "scumbag bits".

In DKS I used the (level 15) Mining Guild set with my ranger from level 16 to 28 (one of 3 Steam bonus sets, later included in the North American Xbox release); I don't think they are included in D2:DC by default, but can be added in the Developer Mode cheat window (give set). When I could start using the Bow of Orobas, it caused a chain reaction, where each item I replaced lowered the set bonus, so there was at least one other piece that could be replaced by something better (I had been collecting equipment that until then was not good enough to break up the set). On level 16 I also started using the Orobas Bracers, but with only one piece of that set there were no extra bonuses; on level 25 they got replaced with some random gauntlets from a chest.
