If fairness, non-variant humans are garbage. Getting +1 to all 6 attributes isn't great when you're not going to be able to make effective use out of at least 3 of those +1's, and they literally don't get anything else.

vmun is too strong and baseline human is too weak.
but then again, Dragonborn exist and are a core race who are even worse

They improved them somewhat in the Wyldemount version. At least they have darvision there, something that one expects a giant lizardman would have in the first place.

Variant Humans are a very powerful race. Out of 30 builds I have on D&D Beyond, 9 of them are V-Humans. But considering every 10 level build will have only 2 ASIs, it's the only way to get a 2 feat combo, and pump an ability 2 points. That is unless you go 6 levels of Fighter. Larian could fix this by giving all players a 1st level feat smile. Just a pipe dream, I know.

Regular Humans do have their uses. I mean besides servants. They are good for multi-classing with point buy, when you have 2 different spellcasting abilities. You can get that 13 to qualify, and not cripple your other ability scores. But with no dark vision, poison resistant, racial magic, extra skill; they really do lag behind though.

If variant humans or any other races were too powerful, WOTC would have pull off an errata for those. The major issue with powers as a whole is most people don’t use them. The races and classes bring flavors for everyone, it’s up to the player to know how they want to play D&D and which options and flavors work the best toward their goal. If you can’t figure out by yourself what fit what you want to play, you can ask around or on any D&D related place, YouTube and websites, and people would be please to share their passion and knowledge of the hobby with you.

that kind of assumes taht WOTC is good at balancing.

The GodMode Moon druid, the "Lucky" feat... and then the mastermind rogue and beastmaster subclass and the Actor and "keen mind" feat.
