I had both problems you did. First, I didn't get the cut scene (therefore no option to tickle the spider). Do you have a saved gave right before you walked over to that area? I reloaded the one before, it was only by a couple minutes, and when I approached after applying the creme (from my inventory, btw, I grabbed all the bottles way earlier) I got the tickle option.

Then, when I tickled his right side, he attacked! I also had to tickle the left to get him to follow me.

Try using a saved game right before; it may just be that new one that is buggered, that is what it was for me.

I don't have a save before I picked up the cremes.

Neither did I. I used the saved game right before my last (it was only a couple minutes earlier). I picked up the cremes about 3 hours of gameplay earlier and had been carrying them around. All I did was use a different save game, any different save game. Hope that works for you.

I totally give up. It goes against my grain to leave a quest broken, though.

Have you tried not to pick up the cremes at all. Use savegame where you haven't been in the alchemist house, then go there, click on the creames. (I just used all of them, doesn't matter). Then approach spider...?

Another question btw:
How do you gain the special potion that the Imp just outside the alchemist house want's? I found the recipe, but do I need alchemy skills to make that potion myself?

No you don't.

In the alchemist house you have some "special potions", two yellow and two purple. Mix the first yellow with first purple. They will disappear (nothing to worry about). Mix the second yellow with the second purple, and the needed potion will appear.

And no alchemy skill at all is needed to *spoiler*:

I was lucky and had a save where i did not take the potions into my inventory. So i just drank a potion to remove all stench, i think it was the grey one to the left..and then the yellow one, it said it smells like chicken..but don't take them from the table, just click and use them. Then i went to the spider and it was peaceful. A dialog box popped up and i chose "tickle left side between second and third leg", then it followed me to the hut of the questgiver.
