I beg of you to add respecialisation option (for companions) in the first update.
I don't care as much for optimisation, bug fixes, new classes, races etc this early on - the only thing that has stopped me from playing on at 10 hours is NO RESPEC

As a tiefling warlock, who am I supposed to bring along? The only tank hates my guts and everyone hates her, the only two characters I immediately clicked with do not go with a warlock build (one of them IS a warlock).

This is a very reasonable request, I am not asking about petty irrelevant stuff like "change the order of voices in the CC" or "minor gameplay changes" that would require the whole engine being rewritten (talking about you, RTwP).
You had the mirror of change in DoS2, and you added another one at Fort Joy due to huge demand.
Where.are.they.now. cry cry cry

Please, give me something, a console command even, please.
Thank you.

I don't know.
If you change the class of ShadowHeart, their dialog will be a nonsense, not according to her history. Same for Gale, a wizard you could respec in rogue (for example) ? Pretty weird no ? ^^
In DoS2 it's not a problem, there is no class system.

I propose to add more companions to be able to choose one who suit more to your party.

Here is the thing: That is an unreasonable request, because the characters have specific dialogue, quests, backstory etc. !
Changing their class wouldn't make any sense.

You also need to keep in mind that larian will at least double the current amount of companions until release, so the "who am I supposed to bring as a ... ?" question will become irrelevant.
Ofc it isn't ideal right now, but changing something fundamental about how companions work based on a problem that will be fixed sooner or later anyway is a terrible idea.

The only thing I could imagine in the final game would be a respec option that resets a character to the first level, but doesn't allow you to change to a new class. This way you can correct mistakes you made when leveling up, but won't be able to suddenly play someone else...

They already said they are introducing some form of respec and still deciding how exactly.

Personally, I've never been a fan of the concept. In fact I loathe it.
Building a character should be a commitment, not something you can undo on a whim.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

+1, but if respec is possible, it should only be for PC, not companions

The problem here are subclasses of companions (which you can pick as a player), and their different stat needs.
If you decide to make Astarion an Arcane Trickster, his INT is abysmal for that. Same goes for Lae'Zel as Eldritch Knight.
Players should be able to somewhat optimize their companions, not by changing their core class but distributing Ability scores (and skill proficiencies) differently than what the game defaults them to.

I know that in tabletop, respec is not a thing, but this is a C-RPG. You don't coordinate with the "players" of the AI Companions what their specialities and skills should be (as you would do in a Pen&Paper round), so there needs to be some way to address this.

So far in that regard, it's identical to dos2.
There are classes in dos2 (lol?) and despite lohse making a strange fighter or ifan a strange wizard, this was *allowed*, not mandatory.

If an option does not affect the game if you don't use it, it's a good option.
It's very clear they are going for the same thing, because just like in dos2, companions in bg3 never ever never ever never mention their class - for this reason. I am sure shadowheart can still be a devotee of her goddess without being a cleric - it's ridiculous to argue this.
And I'm sure wyll doesn't need to be a warlock to make a pact with some entity. An eldritch knight or a shadow monk seem pretty immersive to me.
Which is what matter because this is a strong rpg, the more options, the better personal experience. You just need more imagination.

Also, what the other person said above: in d&d you build your own party, fully aware and in control of everyone's classes, so you are at a disadvantage when you build your char in bg3, not knowing who you are getting in the party.

It is good to have characters with a predisposed class to not overwhelm players, but it's even better to be able to control that, appearance, too.
Dos2 did that marvelously, you could change red prince from fighter to knight and his hairstyle.
No one's asking about changing names, backgrounds, tags, races etc.

They have already said they want to make respecing an option, just aren't sure how yet. It was in one of their community update FAQs

I know, I just want it naow.

This is the first time I heard someone complaining about this in a game. You don't have to respec your char. You might even save a lot of gold doing so.
Talking about commitment, once I got to the mirror of change in Fort joy, I didn't change anyone for the next 100 hours until the end. Tell me how the hell are you commiting to your build of a character if you didn't even build it in the first place?
