Mage Armor, Grease...Those 2 off the top of my head have 1st and 2nd level versions in the game but not in the PHB. Any others?

Actually you can upcast any spell, just not all of them do somethign extra when you upcast them.

E.g. you may want to cast mage armour, but you don't have a level 1 slot, you you have to use a level 2 slot instead - but still get the same benefit as if you'd used a level 1 slot.

What muldeh said. They might not have a bonus but you might not have a spell slot for the level it originates from, so you might end up using it on a higher level because you might really need that spell right now.
