Maybe something to enrich the main character's background could be done like Elder Scrolls Morrowind or Ultima questions to help generate background/class. Or allow players to pick from an array of professions in Baldur's Gate (Soldier could be a Baldur's Gate guard, or with merc co., or bouncer) & give minor bonus based on that.

I agree with the OP, but even more, I would wish that our choices in the game would truly matter - being ourselves a philosophical stone of sorts, capable of changing crucial events, outcomes, and people we are close to (the game and NPCs reflecting these changes is the most important stuff).
