Feats are really cool. You get to customize your character and choose unique perks that set you apart from others of the same class or race.

But it feels like you are much better off raising your main ability score to 20 than picking feats. Generally this means you don't get to customize your character with feats before level 12. And even then you have to trade them for ability score increases, which are also really good for character development.

How about a house rule for BG3 for more feat picks? Not ASI's but only feats.

Let's say you would get a feat choice like in 3e at levels 1, 3, 6, 9, 12...

I'm not experienced with 5e. What would the balance consequences of that be? Would it favour some classes more than others? Or would it simply be more choice and more fun?

Not a good idea...

It would affect balance quite a bit, since many feats provide an increase to an attribute as well. In addition, you'd make the variant human subrace (not yet in game) obsolete and basically turn humans into the worst racial choice.

You could give less feats too. E.g. levels 2, 6 and 10.

It just feels like picking +2 to main stat is a no-brainer compared to a feat.

Not sure I agree with your premise as some of the 5e feats are arguably overpowered and character defining, and in BG3 some of these have been made even more powerful. Thinking first and foremost about Great Weapon Master (-5 attack/+10 damage), which will be boosted A LOT by virtually guaranteed advantage on attack rolls. Sharpshooter will no doubt be implemented for ranged characters. Moderately Armored is another feat that might make a lot of sense as it boosts AC significantly. Then again, once multiclassing enters the equation, there will be less ASI/feats to go around...

Right now the balance is near broken by excessive homebrew, so this might be kind of a little premature? smile

The easy advantage and magic food etc. homebrew throws all balance out of whack anyway. I think it's a separate issue that should be dealt with regardless of how many feats everyone gets.

That's because most feats aren't in the game yet, so in many cases it's just more advantageous to choose the attribute increase in BG 3 for now. That will change, once they implement more feats however.
Feats are a very powerful tool in 5e.

More feats would smooth even more the differences between classes.
Everyone would be able to wear heavy armor. Everyone would be able to use magic, ...

Feats are awesome if you know the game very well and if you want to add them to your specific character builds.
(Check video on youtube, there are amazing cheesy builds using feats)

They should not become common according to me or the D&D balanced would be even more altered (and according to feedback, it looks like many want something more accurate to D&D, which still doesn't mean a perfect translation).

Compared to 3/3.5e and PF, 5e reduced the number of Feats your characters could take (and made them an alternative to stat increases) but the Feats themselves are more powerful. Making them more common would throw out the game balance considerably.

Yes, I know that there is an argument that balance has already been altered by Larian's interpretation of the game rules, but you don't tackle a perceived problem by adding to it.
