Mod edit: previous thread title; 'Armor customization'.

It would be great if we could get initial armor customization, even if it’s just colors due to the time that it might take to implement different varying armor sets for each class.

I would love for there to be an NPC that can cast illusions to transmogrify our weapons and armor to other styles we have, like in Diablo 3.

+1 from me. I really enjoy style swapping and dyeing. I wish it would become a standard.

There should be multiple armour styles (racial and class) that anyone can wear. We can already craft and collect herbs, let us make dyes as well.

I doubt there's a developer out there who wouldn't want to provide more options for how your character looks. But it usually is tied to costs and the budget.

I'd love to see a whole range of clothing and armor options but not at the expense of fixing the actual gameplay (which IMO is a big mess right now). But if they can without compromising the actual gameplay, please add as much as you can. I too would love to see more customization.

True, something like this would be a late stage development thing as it is not priority for the experience, but it might be a consideration near the end when most of the egregious problems have been fixed and the remaining ones are getting fixed.

Actualy there allready is ... kinda. :-/
Some NPC have alterned collors for armour, but when you put it on ... its once aggain the same generic armor you allready had.
It can be seen with few mage "robes" ... and with Githyanki armor, Beretha have Silver/Red colloring, but when you put it on its Silver/Black for some reason. :-/

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown

I would like something more than that. For whatever race you are, that style should automatically unlock, then where you travel and who you meet will unlock other styles (possible examples - meeting Lae'zel unlocks Githyanki and going to the Underdark unlocks Drow.) Not sure how to work class styles, but perhaps something similar. Prefer this to having to find recipes during exploration but that could be a possibility as well. Crafting should be simple since many people don't like it, perhaps just a base material (cloth, leather or metal) and an item (different depending on the style) and dye would be just something added to it. We should be able to wear an npc's special armour without the colour changing if we want though.

Well ... as long as it will be conditioned by time and gold spend by alterning the armor, i gues it would be fine. :-/

But i certainly HATE in games when armor changes automaticly by re-equiping it by other party member. :-/

First i kinda liked starting sets ... but now, when Druid was added it seem a little sad for other classes. :-/

Especialy Rogue, that have just regular leather armor ...
Ranger that have a little collored regular leather armor ...
And of course Wizard, that have regular ... i dont even know if that can be called robe, more like coat? laugh

Have anyone catched any note that those amors are just placeholders? :-/

I posted this in another thread, but I hope we get variants for starting armor that we can choose in character creation.

For example, the standard issue wizard robe gets old after seeing it enough times.

Choosable starting equipment (both armor and weapons) i allready supported few times in another threats ...
As long as its purely question of style, not stats. :-/
Right now i just ask about that potential placeholder ... hoping that would be mentioned somewhere and i just missed it. laugh

Agreed about that robe ... for myself is thrice. laugh

Maybe there could be an optional rule implemented of starting gold and we get to choose what equipment to start with?

I'd like more armor options in the first few hours of the game, even if they're just small cosmetic differences with no extra stats. I get tired of seeing the same leather armor on my Rogue MC in all these cutscenes.

I wouldn't want it as part of character creation though, because that would remove the fun of finding it as a drop after battle or in a treasure chest.

I'd like a clothing item to be easily looted from a corpse on the Nautiloid. So if you're playing a class that can go armourless but starts with armour, you've got that option.

There is a scroll of mage armour in the first chamber, but I'd rather not parade my PC around in her undies. Astarion is in one of those pods watching you "strutting about". Awkward.

I don't think we really need starting gold. I mean you can make it pretty fast to purchase any varied gear. I mean on my last play through I had a warrior, and had enough gold to buy him twin green axes on my first visit to the cove. But I do agree, it would be nice to have varied armor. I am hoping it is just because this is EA.

It'd be nice to be able to actually pick gear, like in pnp, especially for classes that have a lot of gear variation depending on how they get built, such as fighter or cleric. Especially for dex based fighter or cleric builds. Its not hard to gather a set of gear in the opening area that suits you better, but it would be nice to be able to just have it from the get go.

If there is one thing I absolutely tend to tilt on in RPGs, then it is their dreadful attires that do not match whatever I had in mind even the slightest.

So *ALL MY YES* to more cosmetic choices regarding armor.

I like what the starting druid is wearing and would like to see and enhanced style of similar druid armor lootable somewhere in the game too. Also since Gith supposedly now come equipped with Githyanky weaponry, it would have been nice to see Lae'zel toting a Gith sword too?

Having customisable equipment, or at least a selection of styles to choose from, is a recurring request. If I manage to find all the previous such threads, I'll merge them. However, given the obscure nature of some of the thread titles, this may take more time and effort than I can muster at present.

I would say that I can't see this being a priority for Larian at present, but it doesn't hurt to put such requests forward.

EDIT: Aaaand now I remember. We had plenty of decent threads and posts about customisable armour (and clothing), but some posters decided to derail them by pushing for an argument about gender politics and the role of women in historical conflict. The threads ended up locked and shut away in the naughty cupboard.

I have merged the latest (non-locked thread) with this one with the optimistic hope that this will remain free of real-world gender discussions.

Hell now I am curious how a thread about customized armor can derail into gender politics and the role of women in historical combat lol.

I like these ideas and definitely want to see Elven, Dwarven armour sets etc. Though I’m not sure how your average human or elf fits into Dwarven armour. A part of me is quite taken with the concept of race specific/locked armour but I appreciate this would never happen and would probably turn most people off.

Definitely would love to see more variety and some toned down options too, not everything needs to be so garish. There’s some really hideous armour options and I can’t bring myself to wear them.

I would love a greater variety of armor too. And that the otehr classes get the druid treatment and their signature armor - that would be great.

Speaking of customizable options,

The highest priority for me would be clerics and paladins. To be able to have the regalia/symbol of their deity/oath on their armor.

Back to variation,

For classes like sorcerer, monk, and wizard (no armor proficiencies) it'd be fun to find headpieces, accessories, etc. to wear to fit the character aesthetic you're looking for and a good variety of simple robes.

For classes like bard, rogue, druid, and warlock (light armor proficiencies), I really like the uniqueness of what was done for druid. I would like to see something similar for warlock, rogue, and bard.

I know there's always the concerns about budget, time, etc, but I think this is not something that should be low on the priority list in any way.
To me, it's VERY IMPORTANT that what I see on screen somewhat relates to the idea I had in mind when coming up with a character. If there's a wide disconnect, I simply end up playing someone/something else, because the look is too much in conflict with the idea. A lawful good human wizard and an evil drow wizard don't shop the same place.
I've passed on many RPGs (looking at you, BioWare) because I didn't like the possible looks on the characters.

It would be a big improvement if Larian (or modders) could just add colorization options like the "dye" options for Geralt's armor sets in The Witcher 3. That was nicely integrated into the game. You didn't immediately get color choices, you had to find the various dye colors in the world or buy from merchants.

I could then make my Rogue's leather armor black instead of brown as a bit of user customization. It might not be as useful for the metal armor sets, but great for leather and wizard robes. And it wouldn't require completely new designs, just a change in the color palette.

Definitely +1 for custom colors.
It would be a great and easy reference to the old games and if it was possible for all companions, it would be even better.

I don't care at all about other cosmetic options.
According to me it would be a waste of time. More items is always good. Cosmetic for cosmetic is not.

Custom starting equipment (like in Solasta/DnD - wich armor/weapons/items/...) is also something I'd like, but I guess that's not what this thread is about.

Not big on custom color pallet, but additional armors like masterwork instead of jumping straight to +1 would be nice. Also instead of a cloak add backpacks to the slot. Bandolier instead of belt, and so on.

Looking at NPCs, the modellers have gone out of their way to provide lots of variations of the same item models for them. It would be a shame if all this variety wasn't available to the player as well, in some form or fashion.

As I said in another thread I would like to see in BG3, maybe thanks to a no slot consuming item, what they did in Original Sin II that is make the armor morph into the unique style of whomever was wearing it, Sebille had elves style with the armor or dresses with an obvious vegetal design with leaves, and so on.

I don't think we should be able to completely "transmogrify" how armor looks to respect the original designer's work. Like changing a black "Leather Armor of Shadows" into a bright yellow chainmail bikini, just because we like that particular look and like the stealth bonus, no.

But I'd like to be able to customize the colors like in the Infinity Engine games.

And just many more armor models in general, especially clothing that already exists but only for NPC's.

I would very much like to be able to tint the armor colors. Even if it just allows us to tint two of the elements that would be a major improvement.

I want to be able to change the colors of my wizards robe

Something like we had in BG1/2 to choose colors

Beyond that, definitely the more options and variety the better, but at least do the colors thing

The customization needs to start at character creation for sure so you're not forced to start the game in the wrong clothing.

Spellcasters especially.. they're kind of forced into a spellcaster uniform without any personality whatsoever. I want a long coat and pants, or basically anything edgier than a flat robe.

There's some kind of a tinting system in place already because NPC's in the same armor have diferent colors. Hopefully that will extend to PC's. BG1 had it in 1998. =)

Since this was merged into a mega-thread I'll try to provide some actually useful suggestions instead of just saying "YES!". I know this isn't a high priority for Larian, and I have seen that the armor in the game that will appear later on is at least much better than the pieces we had in DOS2. I am also aware of that most people at Larian probably has much more experience than I at making these suggestions work in practice and I would assume that there is a legitimate reason these kinds of things have not been implemented already.

However - from a roleplaying perspective I would definitely argue that the attire that you have is at least as important as the actual appearance of your character and I must admit I never really understood the idea behind letting us have a detailed character creation while "forcing" us to wear armor that might be near the very opposite of what we believe our character would be wearing.

What I am trying to say is: the way our characters dress is as much a part of their character as their hair color, eye color or tattoos. If you imagine your character as a mercenary thief or assassin skulking around in the night, then the simple leather outfit might feel out of place. I mean, our companions (that also start at level 1) have lost some (most?) of their powers due to the tadpole - there is no reason the player couldn't use a similar story about being more powerful than a level 1 adventurer pre-abduction.

Anyway, here is my wish list / suggestion list.

* Simple Dye Pack - regardless of how you choose to implement it, the work put into making a dye system would most likely pay off in the end since it would cause the game to require less amounts of armors designs (as players can recolor them as they please). I would personally vouch for a system like GW2 or Wolcen, where you have a few stock dyes and find other dyes throughout the game (I would even go as far as suggesting these to be account-wide, but I could see plenty of arguments to why you wouldn't do that). I would also vouch for the dying to be available to the player anywhere and anytime without a cost (for the pure cosmetic reason) - but I would understand the reasoning behind having dedicated NPCs with a fixed (or flexible) fee attached to the service. I would definitely say that we should be able to dye our first outfit in character select though, to introduce the system.

* Let us have a few low tier armors to select from (and preferably dye with our starting kit) at the character screen. The armor represents something about our characters past and tells a running story of who they were and what they were doing before getting picked up by the squiddies. My suggestion would be either: A) Let each armor type have a few options, regardless of starting class (aka. sourcerer and wizards choose from the same robes, rangers and rogues choose from the same attires etc). B) Tie the outfit to our background. It does feel a bit weird that a scholar or hermit would have the same starting outfit as a sailor or noble. This would probably require more job than alternative A (as well as negatively influence people to pick their background based on outfits rather than story / stats, but we already have that sort of thing regarding stats >>> story anyways).

* I would strongly suggest an outfit slot rather than a transmogrification system. A transmog system would require some kind of lore behind the transmogging - aka. some bored mage changing the looks of your attire for payment or anything similar. A outfit system would simply be 100% cosmetic and a part of role playing to separate the role playing aspect of the game from the stat-stick part of the game AAANNNDDD it would rid players of the annoyance of having to visit a NPC for mogging every time they receive new armor. My personal suggestion would be to let us unlock all equipment we find as outfits that we can simply use in our outfit slot. You could even have some quest-rewarded armor that serves as transmog armor only (aka. no stats) from side quests, main quests, flavor quests, DLCs, events and whatnot. I mean... Imagine if you actually would have been able to keep the cool pirate outfit in DOS2 for the entire game (and not being forced to be green during the process laugh ). Since I suspect our characters might be able to join or at least ally with different types of factions later on, it would be fun to be able to wear their regalia through some quest-line locked behind some form of "reputation" / "loyalty"-bar.

Actually I feel like implementing Transmog could be fairly easy. The NPC in question could be an illusionist and "recruiting" them could be a quest reward. They could cast an effect on your armor, and when under any effects that disable magic the armor could temporarily turn back to its normal form. Could also add the effects of regalia if any to said illusion, like people recognizing that your armor is Flaming Fist.

I also hope they strongly consider adding dyes or some other way to change colours.

Although I think the colour palettes and the armour designs are quite good overall, they still may not match your character. For example, my tiefling warlock had purple-hued skin and hair and that clashed really badly with the warlock armour. I liked the design of the armour, but I would have liked different colours for it. At least if they had a couple "palette" options for a particular armour that would give us some options.

If they do implement dyes or other ways to change colour, I hope they let you choose the saturation/lightness/darkness of the colour in addition to the hue. I've seen too many games where your option for a specific colour ends up looking garish and there's no way to tone it down.

With regard to the actual armour design, I liked how they did in Assassin's Creed Odessey where you can use the look of any previous armour you've found. That still leaves the feeling of discovery for those who like that, while not forcing the player to give up an armour they like when they find one with better stats. Of course, I'd be happy with just greater selection in general, however they choose to do it.

In many, if not most, games customization is a waste of time especially when you only see the character in the character panel. But for games like this it adds a bit of flavor, especially when you constantly see the the entire character moving around. Personally I tend to color code my characters in this type of format so I can pick them out quicker. i.e. Armor of distinct colors combinations.

I agree with more armor customizations. I'd go so far as to add in custom looks for weapons, such as being able to select a blade and hilt style for a sword.

I would also like to request familiar and pet companion customizations, maybe even armor or other items to make and equip them with. If nothing else, let people name them. I've seen that request a lot.

I approve of this.

But I'd like to be able to customize the colors like in the Infinity Engine games.

And just many more armor models in general, especially clothing that already exists but only for NPC's.

I'm hoping in PATCH 6 that we get more varied armors for all classes as of right now their really aren't that many. A couple of +1's of the lighter armors but heavy armor. Also I'd love to be able to allow us to get to level 5 and some more game play through

I would like to see something like transmogrification or even a general "design your outfit" option here.

The mage "armor", for example, looks a bit boring.

To be honest, the BG3 character creator is so incredible limited and lacking in, well, much of anything at all, that I can't imagine anyone seriously spending more than a few minutes on it at very tops. There's just not enough THERE to take up more time than that. It's extremely underwhelming.

A year later in EA and our Fighters are still wearing Scale Mail or Githyanki Half-Plate without any customization whatsoever. Come on now. Would it be impossible to make a basic Breastplate or non-Gith Half-Plate available? A Chain Mail somewhere a bit earlier? Pants for spellcasters?

It’ll come in time or in the final product - don’t want to see all that’s under the hood when we’re likely 12-18 months from release now do we ?
