I used to cancel a character action by hitting the escape key twice (Once would overlay the menus, the second would bring you back to the game with the action cancelled)

This no longer works.

Fortunately right-clicking on your character cancels the casting action (don't know if this is new, I always cancelled with the double escape)

If you are using Magic Missile or any other multi-target spell, Esc-Esc only cancels the latest target. You actually have to do it several times to get back to 'neutral'.
