Greetings all.

This is the 6th time I have played this game until the second half (I have yet to actually beat the game) & now i'm thinking of starting all over. As you perform quests your reputation raises, we all know that, but can you beat the game if you had a horrible reputation? I know some quests are given with a high reputation, but I want to be an assasin & kill anything that moves. I cheated on a character awhile back & my warrior was level 144. When I played this game honestly I got to the second half & was level 46, I had beaten every quest I was able to find on the first half. I know that the second half isn't really that big, & I doubt that there are enough monsters in the second half to give you almost enough exp for 100 levels.

Which is the best weapon in the game? A sword or an axe? I have found alot of great swords & axes, but very few good Maces, spears or hammers. Does the game change as you put skill points into the different weapon class skills? Like Sword, or Axe profeciancy. The "Sword of Chaos" is always in the same spot, in that shallow cave/tree trunk. Will that change?

I found a book that talked about a special wepon. You have to find all 3 & then sacrifice then to get one powerfull weapon (Sword of Lies) but Duke Janus has the last of the 3.. How do you get it from him?

Thanks all!!

There is an experience bomb that can give you a bonus (see History of the mysterious "Experience Bomb"). Some people have run into a bug with this which resulted in very high levels, but the average level at the end of the game is in the range of mid forties to low fifties.

A very low reputation may prevent you from getting or completing quests, if the people involved will not talk to you.

Just before hitting the gong, everybody except those in the council hall and Janus are expendable. With the latest patch a few more of the required NPCs are protected, so you may not be able to break essential quests by going on a killing spree before this.

Swords are generally considered to be the best weapons; I didn't find many good axes after the catacombs. Your experience may differ, based on random stats. The game does not adjust your finds to where you put skill points, or change the weapon type or location of the swords consistently in the game, it is just biased toward swords. Historically swords tend to be the more popular weapons, so this is not entirely unjustified.

The dragon shield is in the castle armory, not one of the holy items. The holy sword is in the first level of Iona's dungeon, though.

VERY BIG SPOILER ON HOLY ITEMS

VERY BIG SPOILER ON DRAGON ARMOR SET

I've not beaten the game yet so I cannot comment on which is the best weapon, but something that seems to be widely forgoten is the difference in specialist skills from weapon to weapon. If they were all the same that would be different, but if you can find a hammer that is the same as the best sword, that doesnt mean that it would perform the same.

Sword5:
Level 5: 25 percent bonus to your chance to hit skill. Recuperation time decreased by 10. Sword damage increased by 50 percent. Required Clvl: 25

Mace5:
Level 5: Chance to hit gets bonus of 10 percent. Recuperation time decreased by 7. Mace damage increased by 90 percent and an additional 1-32 points of damage. Required Clvl: 25

A sword and a mace both with 50-100dmg(average 75) and a recuperation time of 15 would be this much damage in 50 swings(not hits) of the hammer since your chance to hit is determined by str/agi/attack rate vs. AC of mob lets say for the sake of this study that you hit every time (base chance to hit would remain constant with both weapons):

Sword:
-25% chance to hit: add 2.5 swings per 10 normal swings, in 50 swings add 12.5 swings
-Recuperation time decreased by 10: Recuperation time = 5 (5 "units" of time to complete one swing)
-Sword dmg increasec by 50 % = Formula (where Total dmg = x) X * 1.5.
50 swings = (50 * 75) 3750
Base dmg = 3750
12.5 Swings = (12.5 * 75) 937.5
Dmg add = 937.5
Total dmg = 4687.5
4687.5 x 1.5 = 7031.25dmg
Ending dmg = 7031.25 dmg done in 250 time units (5 * 50 swings)

Mace:
-10% chance to hit: add 1 swing per 10 normal swings, in 50 swings add 5 swings.
-Recuperation time decreased by 7: Recuperation time = 8 (8 units of time to complete one swing)
-Sword dmg increased by 90% = Formula (where Total dmg = x) X * 1.9
-Add 1-32 dmg per hit (average 16).
50 swings = (50 * 75) 3750
Base dmg = 3750
5 swings = 375
Dmg add = 375
Add 16 per hit: 16 x 50 = 800
Total dmg = 4925
4925 x 1.9 = 9357.5.5 dmg
Ending dmg = 9357.5 dmg done in 400 time units (8 * 50 swings)

Time unit calculation shown in Damage per Unit of Time (DPU):
Sword: 7031.25/250 = 28.125 DPU
Mace: 9357.5/400 = 23.39 DPU

That tells me that a sword would do nearly 17% more dmg than a mace with the same stats. And at this point in the game all the maces I've found have had worse stats and longer recupe times than the swords... does this remain constant at later levels? If so, why even bother with maces.

P.S. I did this at work with loud machines and tired eyes, so I apologize for any mistakes and miscalculations, its already 16 minutes past time to go home!!! Time for a little DD!

EDIT: I edited this study because I left the 1-32 dmg add out of the equation.. ack! Still the result is the same (sword > mace) just not by as much of a margin.
