well, after making two warriors (one of whom has completed the game already), i decided to build an archer. i used the survivor class for a change and to see how i would fare with this class. so far, it's been great! i've had a relatively easier time with the game so far with this archer (lvl 25 now) than with my sword warrior.

here's what i did: as bows require more agility, i picked the survivor who has a higher starting agility. in the early-game, i used a short bow and pumped most of my stat pts into agility. by the time i faced the skeletal guardian guarding slasher, i had 25 agility and was thus able to equip myself with a composite bow. those guardians and skeletal conjurer lords who have given my warriors a hellish time were not much of a problem this time. run and gun, run and gun, and they're gone, with not much damage to my archer except for a scratch in his nails. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

i also put pts into elven sight whenever it became available. a bow plus elven sight is a very lethal combination. nothing will get near you. you can shoot monsters from afar, and skeletons die (or almost die) in one hit from a composite bow. it's so deadly it's not even funny. add splitting arrows for mass carnage in the last level of the catacombs when things get a bit hairy.

here's the interesting part. i realized in my previous games that the elven merchant (gavanariel) in the dark forest sells very good bows, so i made it my goal to visit him as soon as i have 35 in agi & 25 in str, which i think are the requirements for a hunting bow.as soon as i got out of aleroth, i went straight to rivertown, to gen alix (to get escort for healers) then to gen mitox (to get human teleport scroll, which you will need for the warriors guild teleporter). i didn't do the two orc quests yet; instead i levelled myself doing the trolls quest, thieves quest, cattle thief quest, killed the bandit leader, until i met the str & agi requirements for a hunting bow. took the archers' guild teleporter and headed straight to the dark forest. i just ran until i got the warriors' guild teleporter, and off to the elven village where after several loading, i got a bow of my liking, "savage hunting bow of lightning speed": 59-181 dmg, +10 to offense, + 9 to agility and a bunch of other mods i can't recall now. it cost me a lot, a princely sum of almost 30,000 gold (it helped that i didn't sell any of the axes i found in the catacombs, including slasher, until now).i opted to kill the mountain trolls with the help of my new bow, and i levelled up like crazy on the way to the elven burial grounds teleporter. each mountain troll gave at least 25,000 exp pts.

by the time i did the orc quests (supply train and poison well), i was killing orcs from afar, again with the help of elven sight. so now, my survivor is level 25 and i haven't even gone to the cursed abbey, to verdistis, nor to stormfist castle yet. i don't know how an archer will hold up against a tough-hard-hitting boss, but it's been a whole lot easier than using a sword so far.
so that's it, just an account of a new bow-lover. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Glad it's working for you. Never played as a archer.I haven't heard anybody complain about being a archer and facing a boss. So it must be okay. Enjoy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Archer... I have a ranger, to be frank. Equally skilled with a bow and a sword. I have some thieve's skills and some mage's spells I found. I want to explore and try so that when I finish the game, I could restart as an assassin and I'll know better what to do. Anyway, before I got the sword, I used Elemental Arrows, I cleared the cursed abbey and half of the map before I found "Singing Blade". Now I need no bows, I crushed the orcs in the orc camp like grapes. I fought 9 orcs at time (elite ones) and got out almost unhurt thanks to the freezing blade <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />.
The more I play DD (i got it 2 days ago <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />) The more I love the game and want to buy RiftRunner. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Having had the game since last year, I had all the time to finish it about 36 times, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> crazy I know.
I tried every class combination with a path and mixed or restricted skills to evaluate this fabulous game.
The weak point of this game is the poor story line and the consequential game design problems and cumbersomeness.
I bought Divine Divinity at the same time with War Craft III, and I tell you the truth, WCIII excells as a story line and movie clips.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> is different strategically and it was meant to be a re-playable game as an essential feature. So logically, it is ridiculous to have a divine thieves’ guild member.
So let us bypass the shortcomings of the poor story line and focus on the subject related to your post.
Firstly, I must agree with you very strongly on the fact that a ranger/ archer or simply a bow wielder has much better chances to finish this game gloriously.
If you wish to finish this game as an axe expert hacking your way through, then Slasher is your best choice.
If you wish to finish this game as a swords expert then the Nobleman’s sword in combination with the Dragon’s armour set is fabulous with a bit of hex editing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
My very personal opinion is that brutality is not so satisfying for this game, but cleverness is a multiple of times rewarding.
Take either the warrior woman, she is tall and strong, and make a long bow ranger out of her ( I finally found an Elven bow in this game), or take the Enchantress who looks so cool in archery rig and develop her natural outfit.
The warrior gets more hit points and damage though, so you might prefer her finally.
Concentrate on the ranger’s sight and every possible means of increasing your sight range because you could gun-down 90% of the NPC s while they are strolling unaware from afar with a poisoned arrow to make them twitch then fire at will. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Agility here is a must for a lot of running and manoeuvre and you yell at the chief of the trolls, keep’em coming. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I also discovered that the hit points of an identifiable weapon is randomised, so I kept loading and loading and loading until I got an Elven bow with 96 – 192 hit points.
Say farewell to all melee. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />
That Elven bow was a single-deadly-shot with zero repeat offence time and speed 6 and hello machine-bow-gun in the Middle Ages. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I needed the Hell Spikes Spell though for that ‘Son of a Witch’, which swirls around un-target-able.
Else than that you need a shovel to burry the hordes you kill. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
One more thing though, my hero was the queen of scorpions too.
Especially in the end game dungeons where a scorpion would lead the way to show me the doors by stimulating enemy to cross open doors.
Steel scorpions end up having an invincible level 100. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" />
I bought every scorpion trap that I found with any character that trades.
The deadly gift skill is also a requirement.
You could also cheat but it takes the fun away though.
Cheers.

Correct!
It irritated me so much because I happen to be THIS type of game maniac.
Not to mention that I am 47 (almost 48) years old and a retired professor.
So I loved the game so much in general that I felt betrayed by the imperfection of that side of the product. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
The best steel demands a lot of hammering and my intentions as a fan are selfish in that I would love to buy an almost perfect game; story line, game design, graphics, music and even a lollypop with the package. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Apart from the worst story line ever, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> Kroxy was absolutely funny when he discovered that he was a priest rather than a warrior, it cracked me up. But this does not mean that we have to kill <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> as a blessing and to give it the chance to be the divine game. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> But Shrimpo was a pathetic gold-fish-[nocando] that was unfoundedly stuck into the quests. Corina gets killed after she persuades you to join the thieves to free Penumbra to get the book and you go to Pierce who sold the last bottle of bad wine to the merchant who wants you to kill Empenzak whom you befriended and need for the treasure map and the holy branch, and the whole side quest is a pathetic fabrication I MUST OBJECT. You free a cat and you get scolded by beggar-children. You work as a part-time postman and a dish washer accidentally because they had no material to work with initially and I may not blame the talented team that found a way out.
Ah! And don’t forget Uncle Smooch the teddy of the teen whore. I almost cry.
Ring a bell; hit a gong; yell from a tower; NO MORE BAD STORY LINES PLEASE.
It tortures game addicts as my self.

Perhaps the budget was tight and we may forgive Larian Studios for having to compete with giants on quality and on delivery time. Now there are no more excuses and we have our great expectations on <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> and <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> [color:"pink"] II[/color] .

Cheers.

DAD, I disagree about Corinna - I liked that side quest: A dedicated and unskilled summoner at the same time = the trap if you gave her the wrong branch - her joy when she found out it worked.
Humour is subjective, I like the Larian humour.

Same for the teddy: This unpleasant little arrogant girl - and then still needing her teddy - was cute IMO.

Dishwashing: Ok, it cost me hot water kettle and a keyboard in RL out of frustration - but I laughed a lot.

Kroxy: I'm glad we agree on this - yeah, killing and blessing are the same <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Div has a nostalgic charm for me - couldn't you just leave it like this: some like it, some not - and that's it?

I can honestly say that Divne Divinity had quests like no game before.
Still I guess I'll retire for a while, too many spoilers for me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />. I just got the game 3 days agon and I am pretty early in the game: I am trying to join the thieve's guild to save the wizard... anyway, I see the causes of DAD's sceptic mind <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />.

A bit :offtopic<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />
Wish there were a Force Attack function so that I could hack that teen whore to pieces, including everyone in the castle...

Hi Kiya,
You did a fantastic job on documenting this game’s tips and tricks like a true librarian.
My humble admirations.

Humour was excellent not just good, and whoever took care of character design was very consistent.
Kroxy said “XXBTRPLTRL” or whatever it was that it was STUPID (I agree with Kroxy of course). <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />
”Kroxy wants to go to council NOW. Ha it works,” Is Very funny indeed, because it is also very consistent with Kroxy’s character.
Character design IS a partial professional task demanded from story makers.
That part was done perfectly in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />.
Corrina or Corinna also had a consistent character and no objection related to that.
I love humour and I am a very funny person personally but not professionally.
A good doctor may not come out smiling from the operation room and tell the patient’s family “Hahaha I killed your beloved”. A politician may not make jokes that bring his reputation down.
So including humour in a story is good but making a story that is in itself a joke is very bad.
It was quite humorous to me when I read the title “Define Infinity” and it was a very witty title.
How about Design Insanity?
If the game was about having fun and getting ridiculous then yes they have designed the game perfectly.
Is it?
The Orcish humour as well as the Impish cute character is really fantastic and I love them.
Such humour is great when it is inserted in the details of handling characters and dialogs or monologs.
My take is that the sub-quest of the summoner itself is a bad joke that makes a joke out of the story.
The same goes to Shrimpo.
I am talking very professionally here.
A bad game design point is to punish the player for HIS/ HER humour by selecting the wrong answer or question during a dialog such that the whole quest is lost forever with no way back for correction, while taking liberty at showering the game customers by humour.
Closed doors that no lock pick could ever open and disabling spells is the easy way for handling back correlations in an open architecture game that has numerous possibilities of quest sequencing and interrelations.
The game designer could give us a “tip” that TIPSIX is in the cave by finding his GREEN sedan car parked outside the cave with a “Nuclear Waste Badge”. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Humour is one thing and the dignity of the RPG is another thing.
A Middle Ages hero fighting dragons and skeletons in dungeons by axe and sword, seeking the holy grail for holding holy water to dispel magic of transformation is a great deed of heroism.
The evil mage had a line saying, “You and what army?” while I filled his cellar with deadly steel scorpions that wiped him instantly. So I wished to have an answer in the dialog saying “THAT freaking army you blind [nocando]” <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Cheers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

That is a magical spell. Spells are supposed to have a mystical feel to them and that word was fine. Kroxy might have thought it was stupid and that may be an appropriate response considering how he is but personally, I thought the word was fine.

Although I might agree that a whole quest shouldn't be lost forever because a player has selected the wrong answer or question, there is still nothing wrong with adding a lot of humor to a game. No offense but your statement almost seems to imply that Divine Divinity had a sarcastic feel to it. I don't think that is true.

Thanks, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

Well, I still disagree, DAD - your and my approach towards a game is simply different:
I play for fun - the Div world provided me with it
I busted quests, oh yes (that's why my knowledge is there) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> - this spurned me to try it out and creep into the "Larians brain" and find out how they meant to have a quest solved (Miss Marple is calling)
story line - well, I call myself an addict, too - but again, my addiction is different to yours: If I can delve into a world, forget everything else around me = then I'm addicted - even if I swear and cuss about several things (storyline? Who cares for storyline, I want loot, levels and spells <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> )
I've played quite a lot of RPG's and adventures and never compared storylines, just each game as what it was for me: unique.
Professional approach? Probably not, stern professor <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> - but I'm just a fun gamer - and Div provided me with tons of it.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> Kiya's post pretty much said how I feel. I only have the following to add:

Nothing out there is perfect. Nothing. Everyone has a bone to pick about something and everything, and no single video game, book, movie or song will please everyone on the planet. Divine Divinity is no exception. Also, you must concede that your critiques of DD are merely your opinions, and that these opinions may clash with the opinions of others. You say you demand perfection -- but where is perfection when each individual has a different interpretation of it?

As for storyline, you can summarize the plot of every great novel in one sentence, but is it really the basic plot that makes a great novel great? No. The greatness is in the details, the subtlety, the twists and turns that are taken by the smallest actions which build toward a big finish. The backdrop, the character portrayal, the dialogues, the sidestories, the fine details are what separates Dostoevsky from the average writer. The same can be said of Divine Divinity -- I found it to be much superior to almost every other CRPG I've played, even those with supposedly great and more epic storylines. Why? The details.

I understand that you might be frustrated with some aspects of the game. I am, too. But there is no need to be singularly single-minded about changing this game into your vision of perfection. Let others influence you once in a while, too. It can be healthy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

I'd like to point out that there are some "insoder jokes" only understandable for long-time fans - mostly those who were here before <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> was released.

I fear that this level of "insider jokes" was quite high - and thos some quests might have been not understandable for people ( although I tend to think that the quests were rather more or less self-explanatory).

Well, I sort of grew into CRPGs through the Black Isle games... so it's only natural for me to agree with Kiya and Rose, I guess.

I do believe that you should be able to lose quests by not accepting them the first time. Not all, but some. Why? Because if you have enough quests in the first place, this is going to add a heck a lot of replayability.

Anyway, no game is perfect and for the record, I quite liked Divine Divinity's story. I don't think it's anywhere near as shallow as DAD makes it out to be.

You have a good point there Kiya and I respect it.
I still prefer a good story beside loot, levels and spells, so let us agree to disagree. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Would you be offended if <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> gave you loot, levels and spells on top of a good storyline that matches the level of the PDF file story that came with the CDs[?]
I do realise that there is a phonetic relation between Imps and Shrimps.
I never disputed the fact that I loved the game and that it is very cute.
It is when I sit back and evaluate the game professionally (after finishing it so many times) that bitterness creeps up my throat.
Perhaps I should stop ranting as it seems to annoy the game fans more than educate the game makers who never posted a reply.

Thank you for your counter opinion, which I need to remind me that I may never be absolutely correct, only almost absolutely correct. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

again (DAD) u made several good points. But some of the lootings are very fun. I always (almost) play as a survivor, and I think that the story is good, abit cheesy, and very good. But the lootings aren't bad, they make it good also, in ther own way. Though, if u just want to loot, u should play Thief.

You do have a Rosy and a very good point there as you ask “What is the definition of Perfect?”
I do agree with you that someone somewhere might see a female human that looks like an Orc with curved limbs to be perfectly beautiful while he is rather impish but seen to be wonderful and they get married.
I was not concerned with Personal conception of perfection but rather with deeply founded professional rules of making a good game.
I know I liked <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> and what better than playing it about 36 times to the end and each time with a different character-path-tactics composition[?]
We are both fans of this game and I, like you, love this game but my reaction seems to be a bit different than just worship it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
My criticism is a friendly one, bitter but friendly.

This is quite an admirable suggestion and I shall take your advice seriously.
Perhaps there is a future for a non story game that has no beginning or end or even purpose.
Maybe an RPG in which you learn spells that does not work and skills that kill you is fine.
Why the need for a story or even any rules for playing a game, it is a game after all, so you are quite right and I am absolutely influenced.
A story is not necessary, and rules do not need to be obeyed and games do not need to be bought. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Perhaps I should spend more time in green gardens of the real world rather than in fantasy.
The real world is never perfect, so what are we seeking in imperfect games then when we have it all in the real world?
I am totally influenced Rose and I shall begin admiring my garden roses. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Big Cheers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

Shallowness and depth are definitely relative issues.
A crab could believe that it is strolling in the deep when a whale believes it is dying sitting next to it because water barely covers its belly. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
No offence intended and I do not mean that you are a crab or that I am a whale but the metaphor popped to my insane mind. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I know I should have never read the thousands of books in diverse branches of sciences and arts because too much knowledge is a gate for great sadness.

You have enlightened me sir of the meaning of the quest of Shrimpo.
I needed to be a shrimp to be able to admire the depth of Divine Divinity.
Harharharharharharharhar.

I don't think it's anywhere near as shallow as DAD makes it out to be.

Funnily enough, you're just the type of person I'd enjoying conversing with in real life. :P I love science and philosophy, too.

Anyway, to turn your post around, I could say that your view of "Divine Divinity having a bad storyline" is relative, too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> Afterall, bad compared to what?

Of course, I whole-heartedly agree that Divine Divinity should have a deeper storyline, but if it detracts from the detail and easter-egg-ish humour that makes the game stand out, then I'm not sure I want it anymore.

I support that, though I doubt HE'd enjoy talking to me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.
I am really starting to love those forums: several days here and I haven't seen any flame. I guess I'll stay here at least a week.
