Has Larian said anything about this? For example, changing the appearance of Laezel or Astarion? I imagine class would be a bit sketchier if only because with 3 of the companions they literally cannot be anything else; Wyll, Shadowheart and Gale; their backgrounds are tied to their classes but hopefully stats and appearance are malleable. Any information or thoughts?

No info. Divinity: Original Sin2 with similar system and allowed for a range of flexibility, however, companions and "classes" were less defined there.

Yeah, my best bet is that the classes are fixed but you can modify appearance and stats.

Honestly I wouldn't be a fan of picking a class at will dile in DOS 2, especially since in some cases the class/specialization is a big part of what defines a character (i.e. Imagine how little sense would make a Wyll that is not a Warlock, plot wise. Or a Gale that is not a Wizard).
There are custom mercenaries to fill that role.

At best they could go for something like Deadfire (PoE 2) where you are offered to pick between two/three variations of the same class, if thematically pertinent.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN
