hey!

i just got meself a new OS for my pc, windowsxp. and to tell the truth i don't know much bout this OS. my former OS, winME, got [nocando] up when i tried installing norton systemworks 2003.

anyway, will this game run smoothly under winxp? any tips to max up performance when playing the game?

one good thing bout winxp is that the game did install properly, no more manual installation.

and one other thingie i found out poking through my BIOS, it seems the disabling AGP fastwrite solves the splotch problem or whatever you call it.

thanks.

lord dragon

is there a way to increase fps of DD?

when i was using winME, with settings 3d 800x600 i was having as high as 95 or 100 fps. with winxp, i got only as high as 70 fps, and at one time( <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" />at the camp site <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />) after installing DD, i got an all time low of 21 fps on 3d.

and what's with those processes anyway?

ok, its official. DD is not stable in my winxp. it crashes, it freezes, it crashes, and on and on.

using a savegame under my former OS,winME, crashes or freezes the game.

starting a new game with winxp, crashes or freezes the game.

both instances happens with 1.34 patch installed. and both in either manual or normal installations. and, yeah, same with minimum installation.

i will try reinstalling the game and use 1.33 patch. but that means creating a new character yet again!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />

any ideas how to make the game stable?

any ideas how to make the game stable?

Well I have been playing this game for months on XP, and I have been unable to make it run stable. No problems with my other games, just DD. Personally I think it may have something to do with my using a Radeon 8500 (or could it be the SB Audigy). I have another machine here with a Geforce 2 running XP, and the crashes were minimal. I have 2 friends that bought the game that are running equipment similar to mine (Radeon 8500, SB Audigy, AMD XP2000+, 1 GB Ram, WinXP, etc. They all report the same kind of troubles I see all the time. Random CTDS are numerous. Sometimes I can play for a couple of hours with no problems, other times I get crashes every few minutes (then I wipe everything and reinstall).

Bottom line for me is that the game is so good that I am willing to save frequently and recover from the crashes. Any other software I have installed that behaves this way is usually quickly booted off my machine.

I hope the Larians up the quality in RiftRunner. I'm looking forward to playing it, but would we like to skip the grief part.

Cheers

i do agree, after seeing and playing what the game holds, that DD is worth the trouble of saving frequently and recovering from crashes. but my problem with winxp now is that i can't even play the game. i can't load a saved game nor can i start a new one. at the first step my character makes, the game either crashes or freezes.

i'm really going nuts.(read the next post)

woe me, woe, indeed.

i may, or am just reinstating the same problem. yet just the same, in hope that someone might
know something on how to alleviate me on my present condition.

first off, my system is:
p3 733 mhz
40GB hard drive
128 RAM
inno 3d geforce2 mx 400 video card
sblive! sound card
p3v4x asus motherboard(via chipset)
present OS winxp

i had played the game under two OS. one is winME and the other is winXP.

under winME, i had had couple of problems. one is i can't install normally.
second is random crashes, to which i can attribute on my first problem and
the fact that i forgot to edit the registry entry of Divine Divinity. excepting
the installation problem, all other problems were solved with ease with the application
of the patch 1.34. to state plainly, i was having a blast playing DD.

however, on a sudden turn of event while installing norton system works 2003,
my pc crashed and with it my pc(figuratively). all programs in my pc then were
won't work. so taking an easy way out, i simply installed winXP since i didn't have
any winME installation disc at hand. and thus, begun my woes.

under winXP, DD is unstable. the whole length of my weekend was spent trying
configure which setting would work with DD. all of which have failed.
--full installation, manual or proper installation under different settings results
freezing or crashing, whether i load a saved game or create a new game.
--minimum installation under different settings results freezing or
crashing, whether i load a saved game or create a new game.

i also tried using different patch but to no avail.

anyone have any ideas how to run the game in winXP?

can someone tell me where i can find a guide, a site maybe, on how to create
two operating systems so i can install winME.

please do help me.

I have never set up a dual boot system (or used XP much), so can not comment on their quality, but there are links to a few guides here;

[*] http://www.theeldergeek.com/dual_and_multibooting_xp.htm (links to MS' site)

There is a beta version here; http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/#PCI

This was the last version being tested when development was stopped.

The beta versions have been dangerous to use on some motherboards, especially on older Athlon motherboards with a Creative Labs sound card installed. Please use caution, and back up any vital data first.

From my personal experience with Divine <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

The BIG difference is the bloody patch version 1.34, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/down.gif" alt="" /> for I have played the game twice before, but under windows ME & patch 1.32. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> I had zero installation problems <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

When I installed the game a 3rd time, this time using patch Ver 1.34 with Windows ME. My crash's would give me a "DDHELP" error, unkown ? I NEVER had these ddhelp crash's with ver 1.32 patch (Hot Fix 2) with widowsME.

So I did a experiment, I dual booted my computer using partition magic & their boot manager, then installed XP-pro. Then I spent a week learning how to "tweak" XP-pro (not loading on startup all those utilities, un-need services) so I could play games, & I am still learning <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> Thank the gods for F8 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mage.gif" alt="" />

Well I have finally made it to where I fighting the Demon of Lies, the last battle <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" />

I also installed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> (with patch 1.34)on a older P-3 600 Win98se system with 256Mb ram & GeForce 3 64M ram, SBlive, but it ran dog slow, but no crashes <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/exclamation.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif" alt="" />

My system:
AMD AthlonXP 1800+
ASUS A7N266-C mobo
512Mb pc2100 ram (2 256M sticks for dual channel op)
2 Maxtor ata 100, 7200 rpm HDD (60g, 30g)
GeForce 4 4400 graphics 128M ram
Audigy gamer
generic nic card.
Plextor 1210a cd burner/reader
Dual Booting WindowsME/XP-Pro

I am also experimenting with NeverWinter Nights (2 installs <1 under ME, 2nd under XP>) NwN will act weird under XP, but fine with ME, both installs have the same patch (ver 1.30) The games are in 2 seperate partitions so the other o.s does not know about other. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/alien.gif" alt="" />

It's all greek to me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> Unfortunately, AFAIK stack dumps are pretty much only useful to the people who did the programming.

a few questions before i decide to dump the game to the shelves.

1. under winxp, when i manually install the game, the file: objects.000, which usually causes a crash in winme when its read-only property is uncheck under winme, has its read-only property unchecked automatically when copied under winxp. is this a sign of corrupt file or just one of the many features of winxp that i don't know about?

2. under manual installation, the patch 1.34, when extracted in winme has this sort of a file archive which i have to activate by double clicking on it to get the patch running correctly. however, in winxp, when i extract the same patch, i don't see this archive anymore. even if i extract the same patch under a different folder or extract it while DD is not installed. again possible sign of corrupt file or just a feature of winxp that i still don't know about?

3. DD runs better with what version of directx?
and will dx 8.1 run in winxp?

The read-only attribute being unchecked may be a feature of XP. Try copying a random file from any other CD and check its attributes.

The patch is an executable file and should just have to be run to automatically update everything (without further intervention). If you did not modify the registry file to point to the directory you installed Divinity in, maybe that caused the interruption in ME?

DD was developed under DX 8; some people have had problem using v9, others have not. IIRC, DX 9 was released a couple months after XP, so I think XP ships with v8.

my game actually runs a little better with DX9,
not as much error msg at quit time!
with DX8 i used to almost always get mouse freeze after quitting game, getting illegal op sign.....
and have to restart, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
config tool needs a little work!
