So... I see you prefer starting the game at 52th level with 250 Strenght so that the description comes true. Well, as you wish...

Not at all, I just presented the proof that if I agreed with you to prefer a superman to begin with, Larian Studios have given us characters that are kicked around and need to be developed. Besides, I did not invent the character I chose, but I merely chose a character being offered. What you misunderstood was related to consistency (again). I only wished that if a character was presented as 21 years old, etcetera, then I should not find my starting point contradicting to the presentation.

Because I don't know about others but it's not by gaining some house that I suddently feel myself rewarded.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> You got it all upside down (again). <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
I never said that the game should end by rewarding you a house, but letting you be born in a house rather than a barn. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Starting a game off from your own place or your parents’ place to which you may return to claim your new status is much more rewarding than being a secret hero who defeats armies and sleeps on the pavement to wake up on a kick by a policeman to inform him that his victory was a drunken man’s dream.

Quote

Tell me, what's the point of the game showing you "how-bloody-wonderful" your new house is just before the end-game credits start?

You made a very bad technical mistake.
Not "a new" house but "the old home."
They are diametrically opposite, and for sure a new house is meaningless at that point or at best it is as good as a red ruby without any serious psychological rewards.
Your old home is completely different; it is the place in which you were born; it is the place where people saw you speechless and ignorant as any child before learning anything at all.
Imagine looking into their eyes and finding them glittering with admiration to your accomplishments.
Imagine your female childhood friend to have grown up while you were away fighting evil, and on hearing of your triumphant return runs to you to hold you warmly in her arms calling you "my hero".
Is that what you hate?

So, DAD, you mean you want the story be a perfect circle? It's beginning is the same point as it's end?
Yes, not a single of games is like this. Still I expect RR to be similar: you start, you get binded to this deathknight and at the end you will probably return to where you started.
I would like to mention that many homeless game characters have an explanation WHY they are homeless :0)

I HARDLY EVER use annother view than the "flattened one" - I'm used to it. It's more easy for me to navigate.

I changed it once, and quickly lost what I was looking for out of view.

I guess my optical rekognition patterns work differently than the ones of other people. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

The "Full Circle" was also the title of the current tour of Yes.

It's a widespread tool of authors. It HAS a kind of harm, ony, but some stories (especially tragic ones) don't need it.

(I cannot write anymore, my arm suddenly aches.)

ahoy!! DAD, u're one misunderstood guy. maybe u can try another approach, one without too much words for people to swallow. meanings usually get lost among crowds of words.

hey guys, i think DAD's trying to say that he prefers playing not as a character with amnesia, which is typical of most RPGs. it'll be better for him to play as a character whose background/history is already established. take warcraft 3 as an example though it is never/lite RPG. we have this character named arthas & he's a prince. through trials & sacrifice for his people & ultimately for revenge, he lost his soul & became evil.

still, i think riftrunner won't be what DAD is looking for; character with fleshed out history/background. maybe the only thing we get is that the character is one of the council members for the divine one.

if i misread anyone, let me know. & i'm nobody's fanboy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" />

Ahhh! That makes sence! Yeah, it's becoming an annoyance, the amnestic characters.

Then maybe that's what made you not like PS:T so much, we're talking about a character here with a BIG amnesia issue <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Well, you know, often if you don't like some trait it's because you have that trait.
I don't like Planescape's amnesiac because I keep forgetting things.

The first question that comes to the mind for the runner, escape from the rift and go where? Is there any place of preference?

The linear beginning and the runes quest is a very clever investment of the divinity engine, the graphics of bookcases and the effort spent in a rune transliterater.
So rather than giving us direct clues Larian Studios decided to complicate the difficulty level by encoding the clues in rune script and created a quest for the decoder.

Yet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> is not just strictly an investment but a research field for new enhancements.
It looks more like an engine beta test before developing the BIG Divinity II.

That is why my suggestions for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> do not necessarily have to be implemented in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> and could be a consideration while developing Divinity II.

The game idea of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> has no place for a starting home, yet it is quite assumed because the servant of the Divine is a member of the order of the Divine, which must somehow must have places, clerics etcetera and they form a sort of reference for the character.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> is basically a struggle because the computer based algorithms include code to work on detaining the player inside the rift, while the player has to solve the quests to escape that rift. The problem is that a reputation system means zilch for an unknown fugitive bound to a sort of foe. Reputation among who or what? Which NPCs are going to care and change their reaction according to the hero’s reputation? Why should they care? How would they know? Here comes in the storyline because without a seriously good one this game shall fall. The keyword is Consistency because any logical contradictions shall be very harmful for the game-play.

Cheers.

I doubt we can already discuss <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> because no one knows enough details.
Everything we heard might be changed 10 times before the release date.

deathatthedoor is right. no way we can tell as it's still a long ways off before knowing what's actually implemented in the game.

still, DAD's idea of having a fleshed out character is very valid, only that it may not work in RRR, if the character is really dragged into a demonic dimension where he/she is a total stranger except for his/her demonic half. even then he/she may cope better as the character is now some sort of a soul-forged freak & such combo is/can be acceptable in the demonic dimension. had it been rivellon, everybody will attack the freaky character without asking for name & ID. whatever it is, the outcast character will not be well received anywhere & so reputation is close to hostile level or worse.

DAD's idea of having a point of reference is great as well. if u're a convict & u managed to escape from prison, where do u go first? back home 2 see your family? or look for your best friend for help? or what? now that's role-playing.

Larian proved they loved RPG's as much as we do, and I am quite sure <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> will be just as enjoyable as <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> was to me. People can debate subtle nuances of a game till they are blue in the face but it achieves nothing. Larian listens to it's fans, but know what makes a good game.

I have no expectations or feel there IS ONE ONLY 'way larian MUST develop RR'. They already proved with <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> that they also love RPG and I just wait for RR. I know they will do another great job. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

Bioware, after Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, released Neverwinter Nights which is simply pitful. I don't mean that RR will be bad, I simply say that I don't have enough information to judge. Howerver I am willing to support Larian and their quests :0).

Ditto.

ToB was also pitiful.

ToB was only an expantion. For an expantion, it was simply great! It was almost BG 3!
I cannot agree on this one.
