is it hard to learn....?

What do you mean: build a linux from scratch or build wine ?

Building a linux from scratch is hard when you have no or less linux experience. It is easier when you have a lot of experience.

Building wine is a lot simpler but you must know what you have to do, too.

First version I installed was "Slackware" a long time ago. Was not a problem until it came time to get "X-Windows" working. Then you had to know the specifics of your Video Card and Monitor or you could fry a monitor very quickly if you ran too high frequency for the monitor. Now a days distos like "Suse, Redhat, Mandrake, etc" will step you thru it and will do almost all the configurations for you. But you still need to read every step like "Xan" said just to make sure not to make a mistake. Most of time you can download the distro fro free as a image file and then burn the image to a cd if you want it for free. But be warned that most images are huge (Mandrake I believe is 4 or 5 CDs with just about everything). Or you can buy the distos at places like "http://cart.cheapbytes.com". Also a good Linux Book will definitly be a big help also!! Enjoy!

I was reading the past posts. This thread is really helpful. I prefer any UNIX system over windows. Unfortunately, most games are released for windows.

I am bookmarking your site Xanlosch. Thanks for the info!

Thanks Neo_Claw for starting the thread.

Xanlosch:
Your site looks great (though I don't really know, I can't understand it). I'm drawing this from your instructions (very nice, if I may say so). Out of curiosity, what program are you using to go between Windows and Linux (Lindows?)
I'm trying to make the switch though not finding a good program (well thoroughly tested at least) that allows me to run both. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope i understanding you right: you search for a program where you can start windows programs on linux ? You can use VMWare but you must buy it or you take Wine for free.

The difference between VMWare and Wine are: VMWare simulate a complete intel-based PC and Wine emulate the most of the Windows-API-Calls. You need for both a fast cpu and a lot of ram.

If you asked for a GNU/Linux-distributation: for newbies are RedHat, SuSE or Mandrake good. I can you give an adivise: get a few different distributions, test and compare they yourselve and use one.

Of course you can't play all windows games on linux.

As you can see, I made a sticky about this thread as it can be interesting for some people playing
But please keep in mind, that these instructions are not supported by Larian Studios. If you are in need of technical support for under Linux, please contact Xanlosch: xanlosh@lycos.de

oh my God,

shall we start windows bashing? As long as I can play DD I don't care which OS I have installed. Windows is a remarkable OS and also is MacOS and RedHat and SunOS and so on...
