Yes, I know that, but in this case the message did contain real Spam !

I know that, because I get so many ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

I am sooooooooo lucky! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> Get so little spam that have never see any using spoofed email addresses, but, yes, I understand it is getting very common, and is causing a lot of grief to innocent people (and ISPs).

The *real* Leo Breebaart has just answered me via e-mail and said that he and the community know of this problem. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

I only fear that this is just another thing we must be aware of ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Lucky you! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> Sounds like the infamous "Dumaru", which, according to McAfee's site, also drops a password stealer component...

There are NO companies out there that send patches via e-mail. You can safely assume that whenever you receive something like that, it has a virus.
From the info, you can see that your ISP doesn't do virus and spam filtering. So you will have to do that yourself.
My personal oppinion is that whoever is serving the internet these days without a decent virusscanner and firewall is not only endangering themselves but others as well. Its a shame that it came to this.

My ISP DOES filtering, but this one seems to be too fresh for the ISP.

By the way, looking at and analysing this Spam is kind of fun, too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> It says much about the origins the Spam / Virus ... especially by reading between the lines. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

eh... serving the internet? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

But it's true. Sad but true.
And a firewall and anti-virus aren't even enough anymore.

Well, in the beginning I had great difficulties to find the patch at all ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> I found it later by clicking on the "technical details" link. I use Win98Se.

Alrik: Are you not using the Windows Internet Explorer browser? I recently switched to Opera, but still run Windows Update on IE every week or so to get the latest patches... Had last checked the day before this new patch went up, so your tip was really helpful, as I would not otherwise have bothered looking for quite a while.

There's an option to get notified every time 'important' updates are available.
I have that turned on.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
But microsoft has bad timing. I useally get those notifications or updates when I'm in the middle of something on the puter.

I'm using the IEX for those sites I truse, and the Phoenix / Firebird for those I don't (usually gaming sites with popups).

By the way, today I found another hilarious sender of an E-Mail containing Spam : <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

ahhh, yes.... the first time i got such a notification, i was furious that they had "invaded" my system... so i hunted down the option and turned it off!

tend to now always look at options on new software, and change preferences to "manual" update... especially for anti-virus software (after having seen it turned off by a virus at the office a year or so back... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> )

mind you, other than IE, Opera and SETI @ Home, my firewall doesn't let anything in or out without asking permission. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> wizards are awfully paranoid! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

Yep.
First time I thought 'what the heck do they care and what are they so nosy about?' too.
but you have to go with the flow.
Besides... my firewall doesn't even allow windows update to get on the net without me telling it's ok. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
Only had the problem you mentioned once. With downloading java...from a so called official developer site.
It was full of trojan horses. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
