I think you're taking it a bit too harsh. The GM mode is an additional feature, not the main one. And you have to judge it from that perspective.
It was the final ULTIMATE stretch goal on the kickstarter. You have to judge it from that perspective.
And frankly almost ALL the stretch goals and promises were bait and switches... so why not additional features?
