the roll of the D20 imitates life - you can plan all you like or be as skilled as you like but everyone has a bad day - or a bad turn of luck ! ability scores & all other "adjustments" just increase the odds in your favour to allow for skill & planning ! Unless you are a ranger - they just are outright awesome.
