How do you do the save and reload thing to better your weapon?

before you identify them you make a quicksave. then identify then you decide if it is better or not. If it is better than the previous I save it in another file and then make quickload, no big deal

Also, don't hit the alt key nearby, move or run your mouse over an item. Even if you do not have a high enough level of Identify to see the stats, they will still be set.

Indeed, you should save before you even open the chest or pick-up the item otherwise the stats are set!

you can open the chest, you just have to be carefull not to identify the item. Open the ches just safes a little time when reloading
