I agree, just have a quick dialogue line pop up that’s something to the effect of “oh, empty.” And that alone would cut down a lot of unnecessary interruption.
But what if you want to put something in said container to retrieve later? Very niche use, but the freedom to do so is nice. BG1/2 functioned similarly.

How would you know it was empty if you didn't open it to look?
That's true, when it comes to reality,but I don't wanna be bothered by reality ;-) It's just boring to click on a container just to see that it's empty then hit the "close" button again.
would be nice if mark as empty. or if the character says "it's empty". It's better than open a empty box. if you want to open it, right click and open would do the trick.
