It was absolutely fantastic, to see how these "islands" actually survived the storm of time ...

You mean here in Brasil?
If yes, they are at the south of the country, german descendents(right?), is like you said some of them preserved language and their way of live, at the south the temperature is not so high - even have snow sometimes, preserved too some plants and other things. The south of the country with sure is a place to be visited.
