Spears and quartestaves, but mostly spears, are Versatile weapons as per 5e ruleset. Here are 2 handed only. Please make them versatile again, my inner hoplite is swearing against long gone gods because i cant play spear&shield like a proper classical hero.

More mechanically, these 2 weapons are (in?)famuosly know for being the only one handed polearms, elegible to the (in?)famous Polearm Master Feat. Along other features, this feat lets you make an additional weapon attack as a bonus action (1d4 always, blunt, with modifier). This enable some interesting build options like Sentinel (AoO reduce speed to 0) + Polearm Master (AoO on enemy entering reach) for a sticky front line defender with shield AC and good damage to boot.

And, again, ancient greek warrior vibes

I just created an account to vouch for this. Moreover, spears and quarterstaffs are the only versatile simple weapons that classes without martial training can carry.

I Agree with this. forgot to put it in my own thread, where i listed 16 or so things that I felt was wrong, or needed changing.

I expect this to be an oversight rather than a deliberate change, because doesn’t make a lot of sense in principle.

And it’s not like spears were too much popular in D&D and needed to be tuned down, either...

I want to make a spear ranger eventually. I hope we get Polearm Mastery as a feat down the line.
