I just bought the game, simply because I don't have adsl anymore and I wanted to play a game I don't need to be online for.... To my suprise the latest patch was 28 MB big !!!!! why is that ?????
It was adviced in another thread to download this patch cuz important bugs have been fixed but I really don't understand the size of this enormous patch. Could someone explain why its so big?

Could someone explain why its so big? Because it's a big game? I don't know, and who knows? i'm happy they're patches for this beautiful game. there other games were you can scream for a patch , but there will never be one. But if I have to make an educated gess, i think it has something to do with the copy protection of this game uses.

Welcome to the forum
Well first it contains all the fixes through all the previous patches, but all the patches have been that size, and the reason I believe is because of the copy protection. There was some issue with the games copy protection doing it's job to protect the files that some of those new updated copy protection files HAVE to be included in every patch, in order to actually patch the game!!
Also the patch contains a lot of fixes for the battlefields (from all the previous patches) and I think the files for each battle field is about a meg or so in size. So they raise the size up a few megs too!

Be happy that the LArians found a solution... otherwise the Patch would've been around 600Mbs each.

Yup... the point of the copy protection is that you can't apply a crack to the game, unless you made it 600 mb big. Dunno how it works exactly, but I'm surprised the Larians even found a way to post reasonably sized patches. (I have cable internet, so 25mb is a relatively small download.)

I really don't understand the size of this enormous patch. Could someone explain why its so big? Well, the later patches for Half-Life were 100mb. And 28 mb isn't enormous. It's merely 3 hours on dial-up. Get LeechGet or Getright and download it. You ask: "Why is it so big?" What answer would you like to hear?

well, 3 hours are too long for a 28MB file. u can make it shorter in fact, if u have download managers as what u suggested. maybe it's the line that causes the slowdown.
i use that freebie called freshdownload & it works very well despite the download being cut off quite often. thankfully the downloads are resume-able. 28MB can be downloaded within 2 hours.

I think I'd simply wait until it appears on the CD-ROM of a magazine ...
I think I'd need several days for downloading with my Modem.

alrik, it's important that u have a download manager which will help a lot in downloading big files. why don't u try FreshDownload which is free & also small in file size? if i'm not mistaken, it's 1.3MB tops. so that should take about 10-15 minutes to download on 56k. i use that & i tell u, it doesn't take days to download a 20MB file. just hours, maybe 3 maximum.

I think it sucks, the amount of money they want for a game thats not finished. If you dont have net access your stuffed, waiting for a magazine ..... having to pay more for a game youve already payed for It took me one hour fourtyfive minutes to download the patch. I think its just greed, rush the game out and worry about the bugs later, put a patch on the net and everyone will be happy ... HA! I bought a game called "The Thing" $89 AU and was full of bugs, being in Australia we received the English version not the USA version, unfortunately for me theres no English version patch available, so I got a game thats practically unplayable. Whatever happened to pre-sales demo players? I mean the whole thing is that people who enjoy the game will continue to buy a product they are happy with, releasing an unfinished product is only going to hurt in the long run when the sales numbers drop. Luckily for Larian the game is worth the hassle and the patch download time.

There IS a european (so also UK) patch for "The Thing". You can download it here if you still have the game: http://www.3dgamers.com/news/more/1042169623/ - Telemachos

@janggut : I have a german version of getright somewhere, but must re-install it, because I recently had to rebuild my system due to HD failure.

alrik, i hear that getright has spyware or adware built-in. maybe u should try some other download manager. for recommendations, try this site. they seem to know what programs have sneaky modules or not.

being in Australia we received the English version not the USA version, unfortunately for me theres no English version patch available, so I got a game thats practically unplayable. @Foxfaye From Lynn: Localized versions: English, French, German, Japanese, Chinese (traditional), Thai, Czech, Polish, Russian and Italian. English versions released for Portugal, Greece, South-Africa, Norway, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia. So, yes you do have the English version so go here for patch 1.45 for English version

Thanks Telemachos and Goldylocks. Well, maybe I should get back on my anti-silly-pills, I must be daft or blind cos I couldn't find anything but the US version patch. It was several months ago I must admit. I'll have to dig the game out (I was actually going to ditch it, lucky I still have it)again and try again. Still my point was that if the game had hit the store completely finished and polished I wouldn't have had this problem in the first place. Sorry Golylocks, I was talking about "The Thing" patch, I was only able to find the US version. I've downloaded the patch with no problems and it's running sweet, sorry for the confusion.

GetRight was ad-supported a couple of years ago but was one of the first download managers to get rid of adware and contains no spyware (check Headlight's statement here). I have used it for a couple of years with a firewall (Outpost) and have had no unexplained network connection attempts. I have to say that I find it strange that Larian would continue with any copy protection if it had such an adverse effect on patch sizes. This would carry a real (and substantial) cost in extra bandwidth - and all for no real purpose. I am waiting for a patch to remove the CD-Check before I would consider purchasing Beyond Divinity (I will not run a game which requires a CD present every time) so those who delay or avoid purchasing due to this copy protection are a further cost.

Actually, you should get 1.45. Check the partial list of changes and bug fixes on the patch download page.
