I was adventuring in the catcombs under aloroth. I was walking around and then i became encumbered. I watched in horror as my strengh went from 30 to 27 to 25.
The only upside is that i gained a skill point to sword mastery and augment damgage? Whats going on?

Did you eat or drink anything that gave you a temporary strength bonus? Change equipment?

The male warrior gets extra skill points in his starting skills just for saving and re-loading. Someone on the old forum said the female warrior did as well, but not until getting to the required levels for the skills.

Thats weird becausei got lvl 2 augment damage and sword mastery midway through lvl 4 when the requirement is seven?

I don't know if just a save and re-load is required, but some people have found that. I didn't notice when I got the bonus in my first game; it wasn't right away, but it was before level 7.

I also gained a level in sword mastery and augment damage but im not sure exactly when. I noticed that I gained them when I was going through the catacombs.

Maybe someone should check into this, cause I had the same thing happen on my charector. Which is a female survivor. I got augment damage (x2) and that is it. Although when I played a warrior i got sword, and aug dmg both times two before I waqs Lvl 5
