I thought to write it in the post on voting, but I think this idea deserves it's own post.

Death animations and critical strikes.

Those of you who played Fallout 2, will understand me and will need no further explanation.
When just kill the mob it dies. There is animation of his death and this was well implemented in DD.
What I am thinking is to start using critical dmg skill.
Lets say at lvl 1, there will be 5% chance that each hit will do additional 30% dmg.
If the mob is low in hp and you make crit dmg, there will be something like finishing move, with it's own animations.
And this finishing move animation will vary if you use different spells of applied your sword/bow modifiers. I mean if you used freeze spell (or you had +freeze in your sword and it applied) then there is death animation of mob freezes and falls apart.

How do you like the idea ? pls. Share your thoughts.

I remember this was also implemented in Planescape.
When hitting sometimes you heard, bang ! you applied successful crit strike doing x3 damage, and finishing move also ripping mobs to nice little pieces

top idea maybe apply it to bosses only as would get boring if occured too often during normal game maybe when a boss gets to 0 hit points a critical move/special skill/death move of some sort with its own animation could be used as a finishing move a la Mortal Combat

The critical death animations of Fallout were brilliant and WAY over the top sometimes. And I will have to admit it still is one of my guilty pleasures.

Quite honestly I dont see the need for more gore in games.

Just my opinion.

i thought that in Fallout they died a "special" way, when the damage you have done made their health go below -10 (or some other -number)... so in the begining you only saw it when you used burst fire against a creature with only a few hp, but in the end everyone died that way, because you had sniper skill and every hit was a critical and every hit made monsters go below -10 (hp, not %)...

There is a perk you can pick that shows the "gory" critical shot animations. For the life of me I cannot recall what it is called.

Reinmaster. I donno the formula for finishing moves in Fallout2. Was that based on hps, -hps, strength or crit chance or all together, but it was very cool to see. If there is game about war, there should be other aspects of war rather then shooting. Bullet is looking for it's goal too

Don't forget Fallout 2 had traits and perks.
Look at PsT it has not traits but excellent system of crit strikes. Finishing moves rocked in f2.

To implement crit strykes, developers have to bring just two new skills in the game. More criticals (more often) and better criticals (more damage with each crit. strike) That's all
And, of course - death animations for finishing moves.

ha-ha, very funny.
I shouldn't have sayd theese more crit and better crit. as theese were used in f2. Now you have sticked to those F2 traits and ruined this discussion.

But, the idea of crit dmg is used in many games. I am writing about concept, giving theese examples just for easier understanding.
