Hi <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

When I visit the Battlefield Traders/Teachers and click on a subject to be taught .... Nothing happens.
No money gets deducted and I don't have anything new in my skills or anywhere.

Is there something else I have to do to make this work ??

Any help much appreciated <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Cheers.

Do you have the patch installed? There was a problem in the original release with learning some skills in the BF.

After learning a new skill it should show up in the list when you click on an open skill slot in the skills window. If you buy a higher level of a skill you already have, the level cap should be increased, allowing you to put more skill points into it.
Did you check both the hero and DK's inventory for gold?

Hi Raze <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the fast reply <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Yes. I installed the patch .... Beyond Divinity English Patch 1.47

After I click on what I would like to learn, nothing alters in the amount of gold held by either the Death Knight OR me and no new skill is available when I look at my skill boxes.

[To start the learning, am I supposed to do anything OTHER than click on what I want to learn ?? Is it that I am not doing something ??]

Cheers.

Did you install the patch before you entered the BF for the first time?

You should just need to select the skill from the speech option for the trader to learn the skill.

Have you tried learning any skills from NPCs in the main game yet? The ghost Edmund is the first NPC you can learn from, though if you started either or both character with a mage skill class, you may already have the spells he offers to teach.

Hi <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes. I installed the patch before I played ANY of the game.

When I talk to a trader, I click on what I would like to learn and that particular option then immediately leaves the list of options (dialugue options).
But when I check, I haven't learned anything new and my gold levels haven't gone down.

I only tried for the first time when I went to the Battlefields.
[I probably didn't even think of it before then - or maybe didn't have enough gold.]

Weird, isn't it ?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

Cheers.

Did you return to the main game and try to learn something there? You can learn from Edmond, the poisoned imp after you jump down the pit in the arena, the imp Tax (until you play his game and he leaves) and various NPCs once you reach the citadel.

Have you checked your skill selection after reading a spell book? If so, do the skills listed in the book become available? Fergus drops a spell book, as does the thirsty prisoner after he is given a specific bottle of water, and there is another to be found shortly after jumping down the pit.

Hi again Raze <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Well !! This is hard to understand but since I dealt with the forge and escaped - NOW when I ask to learn something I get to learn it !!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/party.gif" alt="" />

[I've always been OK with skills from books.]

I did experience another scary glitch though ....

Following the cut scene after I escaped The Citadel, my "Hero" had no sword <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> Not in his hand and not in inventory.
I reloaded a save and re-did this part several times but always ended up with no sword.

However, I solved it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />
I moved the sword into inventory and THEN did the forge and that worked,
The sword was still in inventory after the cut scene <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

I seem to have a buggy version despite applying the latest patch <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" />

Cheers.

Apparently there was a glitch with something involved in skills that got reset or replaced on act change.

That is weird about the sword. I vaguely recall something similar, but I may just be remembering a couple other issues: in some cases in an unpatched game there could be a problem if the DK was not equipped with a sword during the first act transition, and I briefly though I lost the lucky cap from the talking skull, until I realized that unique and set items get renamed on act change (the stats stay the same).

Hi Raze <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

I think this is peculiar ....

I just cleared all three levels of the first unlocked dungeon of the first battlefield in Act II and there was no big monster to kill in the last level. Just a deserted place <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Does that sound right ??

Cheers.

BF quest items and monsters are placed randomly on the third levels of the dungeons, so it is possible for any particular dungeon to have none, one or multiple items or boss monsters.

A lot of people assume there is something wrong when they encounter an empty third level, or are at least disappointed that they fought their way to the end of the dungeon for nothing but the experience points and random loot. If Larian does something similar in DD2, hopefully they will put a boss fight in each dungeon, even if it is not quest related (or even better, refine the BF concept so it is more than just a set of dungeons).

Hi <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Well that's a relief - that it's not another bug !! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

I do agree about the dungeon thing.
Divine Divinity was much less of a dungeon crawl, I felt, and I am hoping the true sequel will follow the same route and stay above ground more.

[I am really an adventure game player but the interface in these games is so user friendly even I manage to enjoy them enormously - despite being a pretty wimpy warrior <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />]

Cheers.

I only used the BF for the traders. That was partly because I wasn't really interested in straight hack and slash, and partly because of complaints in the forum (I wanted to prove it was unnecessary to level up in the BF, so the dungeons were entirely optional).

Act 1 was designed to be fairly linear, but 2 and 3 open up more, and are mostly above ground. Act 4 is indoors, but doesn't feel like a dungeon crawl (there are dungeon type areas, but also adventure game elements in the NPC interactions and quests).

Hi Raze <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

"but 2 and 3 open up more, and are mostly above ground"

That's good news !! And I'm sure I will enjoy that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

[At the moment I am still "Battlefielding" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />]

Cheers.
