I had never heard of Larian or the Divinity games before a few days ago. What should I do, wait for Beyond Divinity to come out in several weeks or buy Divine Divinity now? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

Unfortunately, here's the twist that turns this into a complex moral dilemma of staggering proportions: I work about 60 hours per week (Spiral Graphics), so if I get into a large game like Divine Divinity, there is a chance I may therefore never get to playing Beyond Divinity.

wow. those look pretty nice and cool for back ground sort of things!

There is a demo of Divinity still available (Fileplanet, and probably others), though is a little large at 400MB (the beginning/demo and end of Divinity are a little heavy on the hack and slash). Playing Divinity first would give you more of the background and help the story depth of Beyond Divinity, though you do not need to have played the first to get the second.

I'd be tempted to recommend starting with the original, as well, and get Beyond Divinity a year down the road, or whatever. If it was a question of definitely only one or the other, I'd go for Beyond Divinity. Try the demos, and see if that helps you decide. Both demos are the beginnings of the game and therefor a little linear by design. The Divinity demo has more quests that give a sense of what the full game has in store; quests in the BD demo are limited due to the starting location, but the full game will have more variety and more involved quests.

If you're short for time, I'd probably suggest going straight for Beyond Divinty. It addresses all the problems that Divine Divinity has, so it should be a better gameplay experiece.

I've been playing the Div Div demo and have liked it a lot, but also see what you mean, it has been a little heavy on the hack and slash. How is the ratio of dialog/plot/puzzles to hack and slash in the game overall?

There is a smallish city with pretty much all non-combat quests, as well as various simple or elaborate quests throughout. There are also several largish areas that are mainly hack-and-slash, though some are optional and some you just need to pass through on your way to somewhere else. There are little easter eggs or puzzles throughout the game.
I don't know the percentage of time I spent on either, but if I was in the mood for killing there was usually somewhere to go for that, and if I was bored with hach-and-slash I always had other quests I could switch to.

If you got a little tired of the catacombs on level 4 or 5, but there were enough challenging fights and random encounters to keep your interest, then you should enjoy the full game. If level 2 became tedious for you, then there is a good chance you would find the full game heavy on fighting as well.
I would bet if you say you "have liked it a lot, but" about the demo, you would say the same without the 'but' for the full game.

BTW, you can play after the end of the demo (IIRC, after you get sent back to the main menu, save the game, then load). This will let you continue on and get a look at a little more of the area. Some of this artwork was of course not included in the demo, so some buildings are missing and you will have to use the control key to target some invisible monsters. Save games from the demo are not compatible with the full game, though, so I wouldn't put a great deal of time into that.

I don't want to disappoint everyone here but my personnal thought is that Atlas will have finished Divine Divinity before the release of Beyond Divinity.

You took a good decision by beginning with Divine Divinity because it's a very great game, it's not expensive (budget version) and you would have regrets one day not having played all the RPG in the Divinity Universe.
After Beyond, the Larian people are planing to create a lot of other games in the Divinity Universe.
