When you click on him no dialogue comes up at all? Usually all followers have an option either the last one or second to last saying something like you'd like to part ways at this time. Are you having trouble with that particular save?
When I click on him, he says, "I'll save my words for who recruited me" or something similar. When my friend, the recruiter, tries, he says variations of "Later." "We can't talk now" or some-such. There is no dialogue option to pick from.
Try transforming Fane back to his original form before talking to him. The same thing happens to me when I try to talk to a character who is currently transformed into a different race. Maybe this is a bug?
