Oh hey ol buddy I have sp2 installed and basicly it is a must for security sake ... that said DO READ THE README TEXT, and when you install you will be asked which programs can or may access the internet, be careful with that but also be logical, you can always change it after.

The reason you have heard reports about some programs not functioning is correct, they are mainly 'older' proggies and I believe MS has a side or check up page orsomething to find out som sun java programs have problems, but so far I havent had any insurmountable (geez what a word) probs and all is working honkey dorey

So from this old timers point of view; "Go for it" oh and you can always make a restorepoint just in case, I did but didn't have to use it

If you already have a firewall installed, then make sure you turn off the Windows firewall after you install SP2. Many of the problems with online gaming are due to the Windows firewall blocking apps from connecting to the internet.
SP2

I installed it a few days ago on 2 hard drives (both with games on) and have seen no problems so far.

I'm not sure how much of it was entirely new content, and how much was a compilation of all the previous security updates (which I'd already applied), but it sure was a huge 'patch'.

I always thought there could be potential conflicts that would muck up the computer. And of course even if they didn't cause problems, there would be an extra unnecessary drain on memory. But, if you are doing it successfully, I'm sure I was wrong and you have a reason for doing it. What is the reason?

well the new feature known as DEP Data execution protection conflicts with DivX. As vfor P2P programs they have difficulties wit a restrection to 10 connections on one port(i think).

not too worry Spick your not likely to use either of those type of programs, p2p stands for peer to peer and basicly is a file sharing program, and divx is a program that is able to play dvd "type" movies ... but once again it is no biggy, and there are work arounds for that

Isn't it really intrusive--spreading its tendrils throughout your computer and placing icons on your living room couch?

The announcement that MS, made stating that it will change the way your whole computer functions..... is a bit over exagerated....

It adds a couple of hotfixes, installs a firewall and sets up your security centre (which only monitors your firewall, AV software and live updates).
IT installs DirectX9.0c (much more stable than b)
You can afterwards install Media Player 10 (i dont like too much, but i suppose its cool)
It RE-opens a couple of DSO-exploits i closed, so i just closed them AGAIN... but other than that, everything is the same, no nasty side effects or problems...
Nero burning rom complains that its not compatible with it, but it IS.
ANd device manager moved a little bit around in the system properties.

Thanks for the info Lady-rain, i still haven't got round to installing yet as everything is "steady eddie" with my PC at the mo'.
One thing though, you mentioned you can install Media Player 10, that might be worth it because Media Player 9 on my PC has stopped working???
